Are Salary Jobs Really Worth It?

By Maryl Joop

David Crowe was a lawyer, but not a very happy one. Of course, the number of people who regularly use the word "happy" to describe lawyers is probably not all that high to begin with, but this was an especially unhappy day for David Crowe.

This means that you need to keep track of how much you are working each week and then see if it is really worth your time that you are putting into it. Many times when people move up to salary they actually take a pay cut but don't realize it because it is a bigger number but they are actually expected to be in the office on Saturdays or late into Fridays.

David tried not to think about this realization as he hurriedly progressed closer to home. There was a time when the advent of winter signaled the start of the ski season for David and his family. Every Saturday morning was set aside for trips to a local ski resort, starting when his first child was a mere five years old. His friends often wondered aloud how much fun taking a five-year-old girl skiing could possibly be, but once she entered junior high and routinely bested all the boys on the ski team, the other fathers began to understand.

One such initial question that one will want to ask themselves is if they want a primary care physician or a specialized doctor. The answer to that question will depend on immediate need, but traditionally those who are looking for a doctor are doing so for regular checkups and annual health care. For these individuals the right answer will typically be that they are looking for a primary care doctor. The advantages of a primary care physician are that a person can build a relationship with their primary care physician that will be beneficial in the long term health of that individual.

And being reminded of this was why David wasn't all that happy today. He had won his case, which was great for his career, but it was the fact that the man David had been representing in the injury suit against his health insurance company was only a few years older than him. And while he was loath to admit it, David was frankly unnerved by the fact that men so close to his age might, not only suffer a stroke, but then have to legally force their health insurance company to honor their policy.

You won't have a predetermined set of hours set for you but you will be required to get done what is expected of you. Here are some of the benefits of a salaried position. Status Everyone knows that if you want to jump to "elite" status then you really need to get on the salary boat. Once you are in this group there are a lot more opportunities for jumping to higher positions and better pay.

It wasn't that he didn't agree, he just hated buying into the idea that he might be leaving his wife and family someday. But after today, seeing his client win the money that he so desperately needed to take care of his family, it was hard for David to justify putting off a decision that would better protect his. His wife was right. All it would take is a quick phone call to their personal health insurance agent to get the ball rolling.

Make sure that you realize all of the costs and benefits before you go jumping into the next job. There are a lot of things that you can learn by taking the time to really do the math and actually look at the people who made the choice to be salaried. This may deter or sway your opinion so make sure you keep your eyes open and be willing to ask people what it is like. Remember that everyone has a bias but the math you do is definitely not biased.
