What You Need To Know About Halal MRE

By Carolyn Brooks

Everywhere in the world the Islamic culture is infecting everyone and everything, including new words and phrases. Two such phrases that are becoming more salient in the Western World is halal and haram, basically meaning allowed and forbidden respectively. You may have seen halal MRE in stores or even online, or if you are in the military, may have seen some of your mates eating it. After seeing what it is, you are probably wondering what it is.

Food that is halal means that it has been prepared in a certain way or a prescribed way by Muslim priests or clerics using strict guidelines and procedures. It is not just a matter of putting a label on a certain item and saying that it has been prepared in such a way, for those who are real Muslims of the faith will find out if it has been prepared properly or not since some of these packages or foods show source and preparation processes.

In general this kind of food will not contain any pork or any preservatives sometimes such as MSG and neither will it have any blood or alcohol particles in it. Neither will this kind of food contain animal based gelatin in its production. Halal ingredients will most certainly include fresh items such as fruit and vegetables, grains and cereals, dairy products and select herbs and spices.

Many foods nowadays, including fast foods, and other favorite mainstream Western meals are being made into halal so that more people can enjoy them. And as more people are turning to the Islamic faith it has become a lucrative business. Many argue that to make such a move in turn makes this kind of food more expensive than others not prepared in this way.

Trend worthy or not, this explosion of halal inspired ways of living has also affected other products such as clothing and even cosmetics. Tourism has also been affected in some Middle Eastern destinations in which hotels do not sell alcohol or pork and have separate facilities for men and women.

This bandwagon effect has also affected the United States military it seems as they also now offer Meal Ready to Eat packs prepared in this particular fashion. Basically in finality. What you will be getting is supposedly much healthier but also a bit more expensive due to the procedures in preparation that can be quite time consuming and overtly specific.

According to those who eat MRE that is halal, they say that it is much more healthier when compared to the standard MRE. This is because this MRE does that contain MSG, asparteme, trans fats, sucralose and other ingredients which have a high sugar content. A soldier that eats this healthier MRE will in theory be less fatigued and jumpy in combat situations due to the exclusion of the prohibited and unhealthy ingredients.

In the end it is really up to you to try this kind of MRE and see if you like it or not. Remember however, that sometimes they cost anywhere form 10 to 30 percent more than the regular MRE.
