Tips On Sampling An Authentic Greek Cuisine

By Jeffrey Walker

Most people play it safe when they travel. They tend to be more careful about their food choices, especially when visiting an exotic destination. However, foodie travelers are usually encouraged to seek out paths that are less traveled. Learn how to enjoy an authentic Greek cuisine during your next vacation.

Do some research ahead of time. You are going on a food trip and you should strive to know what to expect. Search for literature on the cuisines available at the destination you are traveling to. If a friend has been to Greece, you may want to take their opinions into account. Ask them to recommend to you some of the best dishes to try out. Additionally, request them for contacts of a reliable guide.

Never mind even if you do not manage to get a direct referral. One thing you can be sure about is that there will be so many locals willing to help you. Once you land in Athens, all you will have to do is to ask them about their favorite dishes and experiences. Therefore, within a very short time, you will have listed a few joints to try out in your trip.

Take enough time to adjust to your new environment. It is not advisable to rush out for an exotic meal immediately you arrive in Athens. Experts advise that you should give your body time to relax, particularly after a long flight. Taking lots of water is encouraged. You can also start by walking around and eating foods that you are familiar with. Take it easy at the beginning.

You may have to adjust your expectations. Do not expect to find everything as you read it. When it comes to authentic foodie experiences, sometimes you may not get the 5 star treatment you expect. For instance, the hygiene standards may not match what you are used to. Keep in mind that tastiest local cuisines are usually served in not so tidy places e. G. Along the streets.

Do away with your guide book and recommendations from tourist officials. When you are ready to sample something truly indigenous, do not rely upon referrals from hotel staffs. In most instances, they will send you to venues that they know are popular with tourists. A guide book will do the same too. Therefore, ask around for restaurants that are considered not so safe for foreigners, but loved by locals.

Go to farmer markets and stores. As a foodie traveler, strive to be guided by your nose. Farmer markets are great places to sample homegrown vegetables and fruits. Do not be afraid to ask questions as you will always find someone willing to help. If you do not understand the local language, just smile and use appropriate body language. This will help you avoid making wrong cuisine choices at eateries.

Be observant and take on the local rhythm. This implies that you should visit the places that people around go to so as to eat whatever they eat. Walk around and drop by corner cafes and request for indigenous specialties. Get off the beaten path, take courage and try something you have never eaten before.
