Rehab Following Lumbar Fusion Procedures

By Neil P. Hines

Spinal surgery is an invasive and delicate procedure that requires tremendous after care for safe and efficient recovery. Such intervention is often implemented where injuries to the back have occurred or to correct the damage caused by degeneration and chronic conditions. Rehab following lumbar fusion involves a number of steps to achieve a full recovery including range of motion and flexibility.

The process of rehabilitation involves technique to minimize engagement in movement that may compromise the correction. Metal features are implemented to support and correct the spine that will assist in the maintenance of balance and to minimize the damages caused to soft tissue and nerves. It includes a 6 week period for the wounds to completely heal.

Patients are advised on a supportive regime that will need to be applied on a daily basis for up to 3 months. Individuals will not be allowed to collect items by bending towards the floor and instead special tools will be provided for such purposes. Clothes will need to be put on in a structured manner to decrease the movement of the spine.

During the initial 6 week period, it is important to participate in exercises that are structured and are gentle on the lumbar region. Such methods have been developed with the aim of relieving the severe pressure that is implemented on the delicate spinal column including suitable swimming measures. One may not perform flips, kicks or make use of exercise equipment.

For the first 3 months, you will not be able to take baths because of the strain placed on the spine when entering and exiting the tub. All patients have to take showers and exercise precaution when standing. It is best to purchase a special seat that can be used as a non-slip feature that will prevent the possibility of falling.

The strengthening of bones and tissue can include modifications to the diet in the form of minerals and proteins. Most patients will have to incorporate vitamin supplements to ensure that the right amount of support is provided for tissue function. Healthy results and efficient recovery methods should be implemented with access to balanced diets.

Physical therapy may be advised that lasts for a couple of weeks and the aim of stretching the joints and soft tissues for optimum function. Aerobic techniques have been included in the recovery program to enhance flexibility and to improve circulation for healing to take place. Adhering to advice from the practitioner can assist in working towards a healthy state of operation and minimize the possibility of additional damages down the line.
