Ways Of Implementing Therapeutic Gardening For Seniors

By Lucia Weeks

Horticulture therapy traces its roots in the early 19th century as a way of supplementing medical procedures. Care givers used this form of therapy to engage patients in minor activities that have long term benefits. Studies into therapeutic gardening for seniors reveal such benefits as stress relief and relaxation. It gives the elderly a sense of accomplishment beyond occupying their time meaningfully.

The benefits of gardening therapy range from emotional to spiritual and physical. It also creates a social aspect that is very important at old age. The idea is to exploit the fact that plants do not judge or discriminate on any basis. This creates a soothing effect which is highly appreciated by these individuals who require a lot of good company.

The peace that comes with green surrounding increases dexterity beyond making coordination easier. It makes the environment free of stress. Plants have additional attributes in that they do not threaten anyone. This is the support seniors require in their sunset years.

The blooming of vegetation is in response to the care given. With watering, weeding and pruning, plants produce flowers and a greener environment. This serves as a confidence booster for individuals and the group at large. The flowers and greener surrounding is an indication that the attention and time dedicated to the garden was not wasted.

The rewards of horticulture therapy include confidence boosting. The sense of accomplishment that comes with blooming flowers makes the person to believe that he is still capable. The senior confirms that he or she can still do something beautiful. It is an indication that his ability is not entirely lost in disease, injury or old age.

The benefits of gardening therapy include improved cognitive ability, task initiation and memory. The mind feels alive and is able to maintain excellent language skills. Horticultural activities are undertaken in groups. This offers a perfect socialization platform as the community plants, waters, prunes or just admires the work of their hands.

The physical benefits of gardening therapy include stronger muscles. The physical act of nurturing flowers involves stretching, bending and lifting firm equipment to water, prune or weed. The elderly enhance their coordination as well as gain an incredible sense of balance. They enjoy being productive instead of sitting around.

Plants take time to bloom. The elderly have something practical to wait or long for. This has an incredible psychological effect. Their time is not spent in vain. Their endurance is tested and strengthened as they see plants growing from seedlings into mature shrubs or trees.

Homes for seniors are characterized by long spells of idle time. Most of their requirements are provided by the management. A small horticulture patch will transform their live. It gives them a sense of independence knowing that they too can contribute to the well being of their living environment.

Farming has its own challenges and lessons that are still applicable in old age. The problem solving that is required to produce excellent flowers or fruits is vital for individuals and within the community. With expert direction, old age will become a productive and enjoyable period.
