A Grow Kit For Kids

By Olive Pate

You really want to pass on your love for gardening to your grandchildren or children but don't quite know where to begin. Finding and selecting a grow kit for kids may be a perfect option to allow them to enjoy the hobby on a smaller scale first. These supplies will have everything they need to begin planting and watering their very own plants.

These packages contain everything needed to grow a specific type or types of plants. This includes pots, soil, and seeds. The directions as to how deep to plant the seeds and how much water the plants will need is clearly stated on the packaging. The time it takes to full growth will also be stated.

The children will be taught first-hand what it is like to plant and bring plants to full fruition. They will learn what it takes to care for and nurture green living things. You will probably finding them watching their little pots daily to see how fast the seeds will turn into real live greenery.

Excellent plants to begin with would include vegetables. The youngsters will be much more like to consume them if they have had a hand in growing them. Some great vegetables to start them out with could include radishes, peas, cherry tomatoes, or carrots.

There are few types of fruit that can be purchased in these packs, but strawberries might be available. They will make great starters for citrus trees such as limes, tangerines, oranges, lemons, and grapefruit. If the climate allows, you could help them plant these in your backyard either straight into the ground or in large pots. They will get such a thrill when they are able to pick the very first pieces of fruit.

Herbs are also a popular item to plant. Thyme, basil, cilantro, dill, rosemary, mint, and oregano are just a few of the many types of herbs that can be easily sown in small pots. When the children help you cook the family dinner, they will be so excited to be able to add their very own fresh flavorings to the various foods that are prepared for the household and also much more likely to eat the creations that they helped make.

Flowers are an excellent starter plant. They are easy to care for and are so beautiful when they bloom. Some great choices include geraniums, marigolds, zinnias, petunias, and daisies. After they get to a certain height, they can be transplanted into the ground or into larger pots. They make lovely presents for elderly relatives or shut-ins when they are in full bloom.

Purchasing these items will increase their interest in gardening immensely. Maybe by next year, they will be ready to move to larger container gardening. They will then be able to grow larger tomatoes, green beans, squash, cucumbers, melons, and more. If you have space in your yard, till a portion of it to allow them to dabble in in-ground gardening and get them involved in composting, planting, weeding, fertilizing, and harvesting so they can get a real life feel for what it takes to grow these living plants.
