Finding Effective Lyme Disease Supplements

By Dorthy Lloyd

A person who is bit by a tick containing a certain bacteria is subject to contracting an illness known as lyme disease. The bacteria causes infection, which can spread to other areas of the body, including the joints, heart, and nervous system. Lyme disease supplements offer an effective way for individuals with this condition to treat their symptoms.

Individuals bitten by ticks rarely develop this condition because not all ticks carry the specific bacterium necessary to transmit it. In order to contract the disease, the tick must be infected. Removing the tick as soon as possible after attachment lowers the risk of infection.

Lyme disease is difficult to diagnose because so many symptoms mimic unrelated health problems. Symptoms may move quickly from one physiological system to another, further complicating the process of diagnosis. Some of the more common symptoms are insomnia, joint pain, mood swings, irritable bowel, migrating pain, and headaches. Sometimes a physician will diagnose the illness by identifying specific antibodies in a patient's blood test.

This bacterial disease will show up first where the tick bit the patient. The skin will turn red around the bite and the redness will expand with time. Sometimes the rash resembles a bull's eye. The symptoms start to spread to other systems and become more severe with time.

Antibiotic therapy is an effective treatment, especially in the early stages of infection. The physician prescribes a particular antibiotic depending on how quickly the illness was diagnosed. The patient takes the drug orally over the course of two to four weeks.

Patients can take a variety of nutritional supplements to boost the immune system and counteract the infection. The lack of enough vitamin D, vitamin B, or zinc can make recovery time longer. Patients deficient in these nutrients can adjust the diet or take supplements to restore healthy levels. All B vitamins are helpful for neurological health, proper cellular function, and fighting infections.

Adding certain nutritional supplements to the diet can help speed up recovery. The Indian spice turmeric is a good source of curcumin, a substance that inhibits inflammation. Magnesium and the omega-3 fatty acids in fish support physiological processes at the cellular level.

The gut contains certain types of bacteria that aid with digestion. The good bacteria is often replaced with the bad bacteria responsible for Lyme disease. One effective way to replenish the levels of good bacteria is to consume foods or beverages high in priobiotics. These include fermented vegetables, kefir, and yogurt containing raw goat milk.

Individuals who are bitten by a tick or have been in areas where ticks are present should seek medical diagnosis if they develop symptoms. Proper diagnosis is necessary for treatment to begin as soon as possible. Allowing the illness to progress can result in neurological disorders. The doctor will have to seek aggressive treatment strategies if the disease is not caught in the early stages. After antibiotic treatment begins, patients can speed up the recovery time by making sure they eat a healthy diet rich in vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and probiotics.
