By Amy Rogers

A common misbelief that many individuals hold on sewing is that it is easy when in fact, it really is not. Several sewing enthusiasts may laugh at your difficulty to put a thread through a needle because that is probably one of the easiest things that is associated with sewing. In such hobby or job, one must be patient and diligent in order to succeed.

Even with the utilization of a machine, sewing neatly can still be very hard. One needs to develop a certain level of relationship with the tools that he or she will be using in order to handle them better. Below are some tips that can help you how to sew a straight edge.

Just like sitting on the computer to do whatever, the most basic thing that one needs to remember is to sit straight. Being in line with your machine will help you sew straighter as opposed to hovering over it or being too low from the table. This will help you see better the machine, the fabric, as well as the line that you are aiming to sew.

When you own a hand me down sewing equipment, it may be hard for you to find it as old models do not have one, but try to look for a seam allowance indicator on the foot plate. Using this as a guide can help you get the right amount of seam allowance as well as sew straighter. But if you cannot find one on your machine, worry not.

Okay, so you find out that the machine you are using does not have such as mentioned in number two and you may feel like it is such a bummer, you can always use a solid colored tape or washi tapes. Make your own seam allowance markings by putting tape on the plate of the equipment depending on the how you want it to be. And then you can apply the tips mentioned in the paragraph before this.

Another common mistake that most first timers do is watching the needle as they sew. This will get you off track as you are focusing on the wrong thing instead of the markers that you have put. The up and down movement that the needle makes can also be hypnotizing as well as dizzying as can result to a headache if you keep staring at it.

As a beginner, following the tape or seam allowance indicator can still be very challenging and if so, you can always resort to another means like drawing a straight line on the fabric. Use fabric pens that are soluble so and make sure to test them on scrap cloth. The solid, visible line will help you sew a straight line better because there is a clear guide that you can follow.

One thing also that is very common among people who have just started such is that they seem to be a little jittery and speed up even when there is no need to. If you are a starter, it does not hurt to slow down and ensure that what you are doing is right. Always remember that you are in control of the machine and not the other way around.

Oftentimes, those that seem easiest to do are actually the hardest. However, when you are knowledgeable of pointers, you can do better in trying. Learn the importance of practice because it will guide you to perfect the craft in the future.
