Tasty Meal With Vegan Granola

By Janet Thomas

Veganism as it is referred to is both the refrain from eating and using animal products and a has a philosophy and religion to back it up. Vegan granola would be primarily consumed by a type of person who is a vegan. Granola is a great snack and is consumed on the go or as a breakfast then again really at any time of the day.

It tends to fill a person up and that is why it can be eaten as a meal. It is usually eaten with milk or yogurt but this is not so with strict vegetarians. It is a hearty meal and also very crunchy so it feels as though something wholesome is being eaten when consumed.

Vegans take using animal products a step further. They refrain from the use of any animal product and even believe that it is not a sustainable product. Some do not use even any kinds of animal products such as leather used for shoes, belts and other clothing accessories.

It is a crunch and makes up a wholesome meal for practices such as these as it contains high amounts of protein and roughage as it is consumed with almonds, sesame seeds and other nut or seed based products. To beef up the meal, fruit and dried fruit are added in varying combinations and quantities. Instead of milk which non vegans partake of, fruit juices can be substituted to make it more liquidy as eating it on its own can be have a rather dry consistency.

Making it is a pretty simple exercise as almost all recipes follow the same formula which has been used for years. First take rolled oats and add almonds and bake together with sunflower oil until a crunchy consistency is formed. Many take the process a lot further and will add in other seeds such as sunflower seeds and sesame seeds.

Varying quantities of dried fruit are used depending on preference and these include dried peaches and raisins. Add all the ingredients together in a bowl and have them chopped up with a mixer. If no mixer then it is simply done by hand. Add honey or maple syrup or any sugar based product such as sucrose to give it that sweeter taste.

As said, vegans who do not use dairy products substitute soya milk instead of milk. Using this ingredient, smoothies are a delicious treat especially when served with fresh fruit. Fruit can be shopped up and served in pieces or it can be chopped up in a mixer together with all the ingredients. Other milk substitutes can be used such such as almond milk, coconut or rice milks.

It is a fun exercise and the kids can be involved too in its preparation. It is often confused with muesli which is a very similar product but not the same. Muesli is not baked but eaten in its raw state. Granola or granula as it was called has been around for over a hundred years and was first named back in eighteen sixty three by a man known as James Caleb Jackson in a town called Dansville, New York. It remains to this day a healthy alternative no matter what the time of day is and is enjoyed since then by people all over the world.
