Tips Enhancing Your Child's Chances In The Gerber Baby Contest

By Peter Howard

The Gerber baby has been the epitome of innocence, optimism, and infant health for almost a century. Since the first drawings became famous, the company has searched periodically for a real life winner to represent it in ads and other marketing campaigns. The lucky child receives a cash award along with the public recognition. If you are convinced your little one is a just what the company is looking for, entering the Gerber baby contest is your next step.

The first thing you should do is thoroughly read the rules and regulations regarding the search. You have to make sure your youngster actually qualifies before going to the trouble of taking a series of special photographs. The company probably throws out thousands of entries because the parent didn't take the time to read the directions.

One of the principal concepts of the search is to find a naturally appealing child. This means that you can't hire a professional photographer to set up an elaborate photo shoot and then send in the results of the session. The company isn't looking for pictures that have been computer enhanced either. Only children between the ages of a day and forty-eight months are eligible.

It might be tempting to add some makeup to your baby's cheeks or lips, but you should avoid doing anything like this. The company is looking for a naturally healthy child, not one that is artificially enhanced. It may be difficult to catch a tiny infant smiling, and the company has chosen infants in the past, but older children will have a better chance of consideration if they look as though they are enjoying the photo shoot.

Even though the judges don't want professional photographs, they do need good pictures with adequate lighting. If the photos are too dark, they won't be able to distinguish the features you find so appealing in your youngster. If the photos have too much light, the same features will become blurred and washed out. You have to use some judgement when you are selecting your best photos to enter the contest.

Pictures with a child sitting in a bed of flowers, hugging a tree, or overlooking a lake are always crowd pleasers. Most children love to be outside and may be more spontaneous and relaxed in this kind of atmosphere. Not only will you get good natural light, you should find that the extra colors really make your photos pop.

Even if your child is an infant, it will probably take some time and effort to get a really good picture. Keeping your camera handy will make it easier to shoot your youngster at unexpected moments. Sometimes these are the most effective entries. Cameras with active child settings make it possible for you to get clear shots even when your little one is in motion.

Your child may never become a Gerber baby even with great looks and personality. You will enjoy the time spent taking photos and experimenting with locations and settings however. In the end you will have captured at time in your child's life that will never be again.
