Top And Essential Orchid Supplies

By Virginia Robinson

If you happen to grow orchids, you should know that they are just as good as the supplies you get for the flowers. When you decide to grow your first orchid, you will definitely be in a hurry to start growing them without considering some basic yet pertinent issues. However, you should know that these aspects of being an orchid farmer will play an important role to your success. Getting yourself to know them all the necessary orchid supplies will ready for anything that emerges along the way as try to be a successful grower.

Many of the basics can be bought or made on a budget and should require very little in the way of additional costs. To help you get to grips with some of the more common flower supplies I've put together a list of the top six. Simulating a Humid Environment- Flowers require a high degree of humidity, many flower species are found naturally in tropical climates and therefore will thrive best if you can simulate these conditions. Humidity trays can be a great solution for this. They're relatively inexpensive and you can find them in most major gardening centers, or you can simply make your version.

Use a tray and give it a raised base inside to sit your flower on, a layer of stones is ideal for this and can look pretty good too. Fill the tray with the stones and almost fill it with warm water nearly to the top, it's important at this point not to allow your flowers roots to sit in the water as this will damage them. The warm water evaporates and humidifies the surrounding air.

Mounting Flowers- The majority of flowers are epiphytic which means that the grow naturally above the ground clinging to the surface of trees or rocks with their roots suspended in the air. If your flower is one of these species, then you will be able to mount it successfully. In my opinion mounted flowers look far more decorative than potted ones and you can get pretty creative.

Cattleya is another variety of extremely desirable flower. Raising these plants is somewhat difficult; however, its difficulty has made them even more appealing. Even those who are well-experienced flower growers find the cultivation of Cattleyas as a challenging task because the plants will not bloom properly if they are not provided with an environment that closely resembles their natural habitat. The flowers of the cattleya are very delicate, and the plant itself requires extreme care for it to be able to procreate beautiful flowers.

They may have materials and orchids supplies but always inspect the quality of orchids that they sell. Sometimes it can be overwhelming to be in the presence of so many beautiful blooms that you buy in bulk without really inspecting the plants. If it is your first time to visit that particular plant store or nursery, be conservative and build the relationship and trust first before investing so much for your new hobby.

You may also want to check out online stores that cater specifically for orchid lovers and enthusiasts if there are none in your area. The only problem with online stores is that you can't personally see the plants you want to buy.

The medium you choose to pot your flower in is very important too. Don't fall into the trap of using soil or compost as this restricts drainage and retains too much moisture for the plant to cope with. Flowers require their roots to be able to dry out completely which means you should use a potting media that allows good drainage and air circulation. Some good potting mediums are Coconut Husk, Red Wood Fibre, Sphagnum Moss and Pine Bark.
