Since the invention of televisions, man has been spending more time in front of screens. The later innovation of computers only made people spend more hours in front of screens. This has led to a decrease in visual acuity of many people. Use of spectacles has helped to improve eyesight in the short term but in the long term, it gets worse. However, it is easy to improve vision and maintain it by trying out some simple eye practices.
Blinking is something that most people take for granted. However, it plays a very important role in seeing. Whenever a person blinks, it offers some rest to one's eyes. During a blink, there is a brief moment of darkness. This helps the eyes to discharge old information so that they can receive a new one. Communication is also aided by blinking. A long stare may hinder communication as it may appear threatening. It is therefore important to blink more often.
Hands can be used to assist in eye relaxation. The depressed part of the palm is placed over eyes such that one is still able to blink freely. This exercise is called palming and should be done for several minutes while one is seated comfortably with the elbows resting on the knees.
Eye flexibility is enhanced by an imaginary practice. In this practice, one imagines a huge number 8 in front of him. The number should be perpendicular to the normal way it appears. One then picks any point on the number as a starting point and moves the eyes along the number till he gets back to the starting point. Some perseverance is needed to do this.
A person can strengthen eye muscles by locating and focusing on an item that is ten to twenty feet away. As one takes the next breath, he shifts his focus to an item that is about ten inches away from the face. At the next breath, focus returns to the far object. This should be done a couple of times on a daily basis.
A quick and easy exercise is to sit comfortably and focus on the thumb placed at an arm's length. The thumb is then gradually brought close to one's eyes as the focus is maintained. When the thumb is close enough, it is taken farther away till it is an arm's length away.
By trying out some of these eye exercises, one can not only improve vision but also maintain it. These exercises can be done by any person. They are quite easy to do.
