An Overview Of Stuffed Bears For Children

By Alyssa Riggs

Stuffed bears make the best toys for children. They are part of that range of toys known as plushy toys that are soft and cuddly and make fun playmates. Children like to carry them around like a best friend or bosom buddy. In the same way that Winnie the Pooh hit it off so well with Christopher Robin.

Back in the 1890s, a German company was the first to start making these toys, stitching them out of furry material. However, those were stiff and expressionless compared to the ones we have today. They first became famous because of a hunting incident involving President Teddy Roosevelt and a wounded bear cub that he refused to gun down. Newspapers caught hold of the story and immortalized it. Taking advantage of the publicity, toy makers began making replicas of the little black cub. These began selling like hotcakes.

Since then, these cute plushy toys are beloved by children all around the world. You don't have to be a child to enjoy one, though. Many young at heart folks enjoy receiving them as anniversary or birthday gifts. Some of the rarest and most antique models are now cherished antiques sold at the auction block and sought by collectors.

A wide variety of sizes, colors styles and models can be found. Some are jumbo size collectibles, while others are adorable pocket-size varieties. Some models have music boxes inside. Others come with special occasion outfits or dressed in national costumes. Recently, Walt Disney has started a highly popular line called Build-A-Bear-Workshop that makes it possible to create your very own, highly personalized version.

Plushy toys are able to calm and comfort children facing traumatic situations. The Ottawa police department maintains a stock of these in case of any crisis situations that may arise involving children. As soon as the police officers arrive, they are able to soothe and distract the child with one of these cuddly toys. They have also proven in therapy sessions with traumatized or autistic kids.

If you want to be sure and find a plushy that will win over even the most discerning child, look for certain features. Your furry gift should have a body made of thick plush that is stuffed just right to ensure that it is cuddly and soft. Next, the furry arms should stick out and be just the right size for childish hands to embrace. For a totally appealing finish, there needs to be a friendly smile and big warm brown eyes.

Look for baby-safe features when shopping for little ones that are only a year old or less. Stitched eyes and noses are much safer than buttons which can be yanked off and choked on. Also avoid loose hanging bows and strings. Easily washable fabrics are best for age.

Best of all, stuffed bears have always been a favorite among children. With their friendly features and soft coverings, they are easy to cuddle and carry around. They have become time-honored friends and the toys that people most often keep from their childhood. They make a gift that is always treasured.
