Gym Class & Possible Incorporation of Obstacle Racing

By Rob Sutter

I'm sure that I'm not the only one who wound up becoming bored of gym class. The thing was that, with my gym classes, sports often repeated themselves and they didn't lend themselves to a lot of variety. For example, I don't think I can count off on my two hands alone just how often I had played volleyball and sports such as that. Obstacle racing could definitely serve as a great alternative to the typical sports that we might have thought about in the past.

Sports are those kinds of activities which I felt like I was decent in. While I wasn't going to be making strides in any professional team, I stand by the idea that I was someone who liked a change and didn't want to see the same tired act come about. These types of games seemed varied at first but after the tenth time of playing volleyball, you're going to be clamoring for something different. That was my mindset and it makes me hope that I wasn't the only one who thought that.

It wasn't until much later on in my life that I was exposed to such events as Spartan Race. I started to see the level of passion that these people had when competing against one another and the desire to traverse any kind of terrain was something to behold. It made me want to try obstacle racing for myself because of how wild it could be. Of course, I don't know how many high schools would allow its students to go about these kinds of events and for various reasons.

Part of me believes that any high school would be against these races because of how rigorous they can be. For instance, people compete in these kinds of events, regardless of what the weather may be. For instance, it could be storming outside and people will be making mad dashes in an effort to conquer the forces of nature and see their way to the end. For schools which have the wellbeing of its students in mind, these events may not be feasible.

Schools have their own sets of rules which they must follow but even still I'd believe that obstacle races would have been a lot of fun. Sports which seem to entail precision aren't the ones for me yet the ones which involve pure exertion work well for me. While playing baseball may go over my head, I can run around a track with decent times to my name. When considering this, these events would probably make the most sense for me to use.
