The Evolution of Modern Belly dancing

By Mariella Monroe

Belly Dancing has a long history, but most of it is actually shrouded in speculation as well as theories about its genuine origin. One theory considers that the dance originated in the form of religious tradition in historical Arab and the African region. It was used as a program for worshipping goddesses of love as well as fertility. A different theory views the dance to be a sort of entertainment that was performed by women from Arab and main eastern nations.

It has already been found that women in Center Japanese culture, used to apply similar dance in order to assist with childbirth. The dance had been originally known as oriental dance or raqs sharqi and it gradually turned out to be a single name that was divided into various makes and types, as different dancers produced their own unique techniques.

In the west, Stomach Dancing branched into different brand new designs - gothic belly dance, combination belly dance, tribe belly dancing and recently taking lots of touches from the Victorian era, the steampunk belly dance. All these different styles combine other forms of belly dance to make varying costumes and refined movements.

Tribe belly dance is performed along with other women in a team setup. In this style women dance in a synchronized way, and also carry out sets of movements coordinated with sticks played with a focal dancer. The focal dancer is a professional and he or she can alter among the various 'tribe' associates. Everyone in the 'tribe' is aware of the hints that signal a particular pair of motions. A considerable amount of practice is required to create the effect which is beautifully choreographed.

The revival of different types of Belly Dancing in recent years has led a large number of dancers and also textile artists to create interesting belly dance accessories, bras and also belts. The new costumes tend to be more personalized and forgiving than the traditional costumes.
