Guide To Starting An Online Quilting Store

By Andrea Davidson

As technology continues to grow, many people are looking into starting online businesses. These businesses often come about due to the owner's passion for a particular trade or hobby. Avid quilters are starting more businesses on the Internet than ever before. Starting up an online quilting store can be just as lucrative as any other Internet business. However, before you get started with an online store, it is important to determine what factors you will need to consider when venturing into a new business.

When starting an online quilting store, the first step is to decide the kind of shop you would like to open. Are you interested in selling your own handmade quilts? Or are you just interested in selling patterns and supplies? You can also decide that you want to just sell quilting material and fabric. The final decision rests solely on you. After deciding what your store will offer, you will then need to figure out how much money you will need to start the business.

As with knowing what kind of store you are going to have, knowing how much money you need to get started is just as important. Seed money can come from a variety of different sources, including your own savings. Personal bank loans and small business loans are another option. Keep in mind that business loans require you to have a sound business plan as part of the application process.

Once you have obtained the start up money and purchased the supplies that you will need for your business, it is time to begin thinking of a marketing plan. The first thing you must do is build a web store. There are many ways to do this.

Finding a professional to design your website is definitely a good choice if you can afford one. However, you may find that web designers are not in your budget. If that is the case, doing it yourself is an option. Most web hosting services provide tutorials on designing a web store if you are not familiar with how it is done.

After you've designed, or had your store designed, the next step is setting prices and getting your products to your customers. If you are selling patterns, a popular way to save on shipping costs is to offer the option of instant downloads of patterns instead of having them shipped. This money saving trend is becoming increasingly popular.

The next step is to inform the public that you have a new online business. The best place to start is social media like Facebook and Twitter. If you are unfamiliar with social media marketing, consider hiring a professional to help you. You will also need to follow blogs and websites dedicated to quilting and advertise there. This is where you will obtain most of your customers.

Once all of the initial planning has been done and you decide that you are ready to move forward with your business, you are ready to activate your website and start inviting customers to your online quilting store. You can now share your love of quilting with others without the pressure of running a storefront.
