You would think that sitting in the sun would be a good idea. In fact, a small amount of ultraviolet rays are healthy and provide vitamin D. However, burning the skin is not healthy and can lead to skin cancer.

A lot of people prefer the healthy glow of a good tan. It brightens your complexion and makes you look more youthful and healthy. However, medical advances have shown us that ultraviolet rays can be very harmful. Even too much time in a tanning bed can cause the same damage as the sun. The solution is to use self tanning products.

Self tanning products are sold in liquid and towelette form. It comes in creams, lotions, and milks. The important thing to know about them is that they all have use the same process; the amino acids in skin react with the DHA in the self tanning products to make a glowing healthy tan. It takes a short time, several hours, for the tan to appear and it lasts up to a week.

Self tanning products do not work properly unless you apply it carefully. The first step is skin exfoliation, which should be done several hours before application of the self tanning products. Then dry the skin before application. Once you have put on your latex gloves then you can begin applying the self tanning products to the entire surface of the skin. Remember to wash your hands after you are done so that too much product is not left behind. A sweep of your skin with a hair dryer will help it to set properly.

Some people prefer to get their tan in a spray booth. It is easier than applying product but also more expensive. The salon will sometimes come to your house or you can go to the salon. Then they use a paint sprayer to apply the DHA product. Tans from this process last the same amount of time as self application.

Using cheap self tanning products can give you the same problems that plagued tanners for years. Orange skin and a bad smell were common complaints from people that used them. That is why it is important to use the higher end products to avoid these missteps.

Spray tans are expensive and out of line for many people. They typically cost as much as $50 for one session. While lotions and mousse can also cost up to $50 they can be used multiple times. If cost is a factor then this may be something to consider when choosing your self tanning products.

Using self tanning products is the best way to ensure you look great but that your skin will still be healthy. You can find them in many varieties including lotions, mousse, and even spray tans. The only decision now is where to be seen in your beautiful new skin.
