Tips On Planning A Marco Island Vacation

By Marissa Velazquez

Marco Island is a beautiful, subtropical area on Florida's western coast. It overlooks the Gulf of Mexico, and has been a popular vacation destination for numerous decades. The following are some facts about the area that may be interesting to those planning a Marco Island vacation:

The aforementioned area is six miles long and four miles wide. It is only ninety miles west of Miami, and approximately 150 miles south of Tampa. It is called the Gateway to the Ten Thousand Islands. The latter is an archipelago of islands off the coast of Florida.

History books report that the region was originally inhabited in 4000 BC by the Calusa Indians, who settled there at that time. They are believed to be descendents from the Mayan Indian tribe, and lived in this part of the world for thousands of years. They created generous size statues from shells, using them as both religious temples and burial sites. Archaeologists still find bits of these shells when completing historical digs.

History books state that the area was first modernized in 1870: a man by the name of W. T. Collier brought his wife and 9 youngsters to the island where he proceeded to open several businesses. One of these is a twenty room hotel that is still there to this day. The area thrived until the Great Depression, after which development ground to a halt until the early 1960s.

Marco Island is convenient for travelers for many reasons. For example, within 30 minute, vacationers can reach shopping sites, fine dining establishments, world-class entertainment, and cultural activities. It is also close to Naples, an affluent city in the state of Florida. High-end accommodations and lodging are provided to please even the most discerning visitor. Virtually all individuals are happy with the area's numerous resorts and hotels, and the services and amenities they provide.

When organizing such a trip, travelers should take several aspects into consideration. The time of year one wishes to vacation is arguably the most important of these factors: the cost of accommodations varies significantly from one season to another, and for this reason it is a good idea to gather prices from the different hotels and resorts prior to finalizing one's trip.

Additionally, it is wise to decide in advance which landmarks and attractions are most important. Travelers who prioritize ahead of time can then choose the establishment that is closest to the activities and events in which they are interested. It is always a good idea to reserve one's accommodations as soon as a time frame for the trip is decided upon. In this way, the traveler can avoid being shut out of the hotel or resort of his or her choice.

A Marco Island vacation can be booked online or one can avail himself or herself of the services of a travel agency. Regardless of the option chosen, comparison shopping is always a good idea before the reservations are finalized. This is because costs vary greatly among different websites and travel agencies. Few things are as disheartening as putting down a nonrefundable deposit on a specific vacation, only to discover that a similar package could be purchased from another source for a lower price. Fortunately, essentially anyone who chooses Marco Island for an annual trip can anticipate an exciting and memorable getaway.
