Tips For Choosing A Kosher MRE

By Marci Glover

Sometimes you do not want to cook a meal from scratch. You may only have an hour or so before a meeting or you only have a half an hour lunch break. In this instance grabbing a ready to eat meal is ideal. Unfortunately this can be complicated if you are Jewish and strictly observe rules regarding what you eat. Fortunately there is an alternative and there are a number of companies that produce kosher MRE products.

The term MRE stands for Meal Ready to Eat. The idea is that you can take something and put it in the oven or microwave. The speed with which you can get it cooked is often one of the biggest reasons that people purchase them. You do not have to worry about putting ingredients together.

However a common fear people have is how these meals are put together. If the meal contains meat there is concern about how the animals have been treated. With regards to kosher there is also the concern that the animals have been properly slaughtered in keeping with Jewish law and legal guidelines.

However with kosher the quality of the food is not the sole issue. The main issue is ensuring that what you eat is suitable for you to eat. On a basic level this means that certain foods such as seafood are outright forbidden. Therefore the meals should not be prepared on a factory line alongside foods that might contain seafood and other items that Jewish people are not allowed to eat.

Strictly speaking kosher does not just refer to how the food is prepared. The food should also have been inspected and approved by a rabbi or another recognised authority. The label should have a symbol to clearly indicate that inspections have taken place and that the rabbi or authority have approved its consumption.

If the food passes inspections there should be a symbol on the label to indicate this. If you do not see this symbol then it is likely that this product is not technically kosher. If you are in any doubt then you should contact your local food authority to find out how they establish whether or not the food has been inspected or approved by a rabbi or equivalent authority.

There is also the issue of the quality of the food itself. Even if they strictly adhere to traditional guidelines this does not necessarily mean you will get good food. You have to be sure that what you are buying is tasty and worth the effort. Furthermore it is also making sure that the food is relatively easy to prepare.

You can order ready to eat meals from a number of different sources. A quick check online should help you find companies that can produce a number of different ready to eat dishes you can either purchase in store or purchase directly from companies through their website. It is also worth checking customer reviews and feedback to see what ones provide the best taste and value for money so that you can choose the best kosher food to suit your tastes.
