You can obtain an associate's degree in ultrasound technology, but the better option would be to pursue a full bachelor's degree where you spend more years becoming more knowledgeable. Make sure you're informed of subjects like natural sciences, health, and mathematics in your secondary schooling. You will have to have learned the general information these courses offer before you choose your degree. Another way to take initiative is to get first-hand training at an army hospital.

You'll learn quite a bit through courses like anatomy, chemistry, physiology, and ultrasound technology. Your degree study will teach you all you need to know in order to become a technician. On top of all this, you'll also be taught proper patient care and all the medical ethics. If in case you're already working in the healthcare system, you can always take a one year course to get proper certification as a technician in this specialized field.

If you aren't in the medical field already, it is extremely important that you try as much as possible to secure an internship in any specialization of ultrasound. These might include fields like obstetric and gynecologic, breast, cardiovascular, abdominal, or neuro sonography. Having this specialization will grant you a higher salary.

After receiving your degree, you have to get licensed by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). It isn't strictly required in the legal sense. However, some hospitals, clinics, or entire states won't readily employ you if you don't have this registration. Therefore, it's better to get your license before you attempt to pursue your career.

Becoming an ultrasound technician will usually take someone between 1-5 years. If you are pursuing a one year certification, that's usually all it takes. However, if you are attempting to receive a proper degree and registration, if could take you a lot longer. It all depends on what route you choose to take.

Having the proper technical skill isn't enough to be a great ultrasound technician. You'll be the social transition between the doctor and patient, as well as being the doctor's aid in establishing the right diagnosis. Therefore, it's imperative that you have excellent social, communication, and management skills. You should always be privy to the constant changes in medicine and technological advances as well.
