Reasons For Developing Navicular Syndrome In Horses

By Young Lindsay

Animals also feel discomfort which is why they need proper care as well. If they are plagued with a disease, they might not be able to perform their tasks, eventually they would lose vigor. As an owner of an animal be it a pet, a source of livelihood, or something that you would use for your chores, you should be responsible for their health care. Because you would also suffer if they fell ill.

Lameness is one common sickness that horses experience. This is usually caused by a condition known as the navicular syndrome in horses. This condition targets the bones and ligaments of the feet. These is more common to mammals who has a navicular bone. If it is not given enough attention your horse would eventually lose the ability to walk.

To see if there is really something wrong with your horse, you should make it a point to inspect and check it everyday. If you see that one of their foot is inflamed, you may be dealing with the navicular syndrome. If you are not sure what you should do, it would be a good idea to call an animal doctor.

And as the horse ages, the condition worsens. For those who care too much for their rides and pets and do not want to see this suffering, you only need to make sure that you are not doing things that could result to disease. There are day to day activities that could result to this.

One of the reason that this condition might occur is when the ligament is when it is regularly compressed. Studies have shown that frequent compression in the area of the bone could heavily cause degeneration. And with degeneration comes erosion. When this happens, it would be impossible for your horse to endure too much jumping around because the bone would be less springy than before.

Tension is also another factor to look out for. It is something that is usually present when you move around. And constant tension would also create constant friction in the joints. Eventually, the ligament would wear out. And the rubbing of the bones with each other would be a very painful thing that it might make it hard for your pet to make even a minimal movement.

You can usually see horses maneuvering on every obstacle and marvel at how high they could jump. A bad landing would not affect the feet of your pet instantly. But it would be the starting cause of the condition. Toe first landing is something that you should avoid so that your pet would not suffer lameness.

One of the things that you can do to avoid it from happening is choosing the right shoes to put on. It may be a very small thing but it can affect the health of their bones greatly. The trimming process should also be done correctly.

It is essential that the body weight of the animal be proportioned for his age and the strength of his legs. Too much body weight can cause a lot of strain for the feet. This can cause a lot of tension and compression for the joints and ligaments that are present in the bones on the feet.
