For Qualified Plastic Surgeons Northwest Indiana Should Be Considered

By Mattie Knight

The field of medicine that deals with medical procedures performed for the purpose of altering and restoring the form and appearance of the body is called plastic surgery. This field has a long history that dates back in 800 BC when Indian doctors started using reconstructive surgery techniques. Modern plastic surgery has however evolved to a new platform and is hugely credited to Harold Gillies.

The father of modern techniques in this profession is Gillies. Although Gillies was from New Zealand, most of his accomplishments and work were done in France and England. Gillies provided care and surgical facial restoration to soldiers wounded in world war one. Surgeons are medical practitioners with specialty in plastic surgery. When in demand for plastic surgeons Northwest Indiana should be prioritized.

Becoming a surgeon in this field is a lengthy process and only the best practitioners are accepted. The education path starts by completing degree studies in a recognized academic institution. Earning the degree opens the door for admission into a medical school. Courses that one needs to focus on during undergraduate studies include physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, and medical equipment among others.

One may take specialty in either osteopathy or medicine at the medical school. Doctor of Medicine (M. D) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D. O) degree is awarded after successfully completing four years. Hospital-based residency in plastic or general surgery follows after medical school. Practitioners in Merillville are required to be licensed before they can practice.

Regulation of this field is done by two major professional organizations, that is, American Osteopathic Board of Surgery (AOBS) and American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). Practitioners need a board certification from any of the organizations to practice. No further restrictions apply after one attains all the qualifications named above. A lot of development and changes are currently happening in this field and practitioners are required to be up-to-date with them.

Surgery is carried out on bodies and faces for two major purposes. The first one is improving appearances, while the second one is to correct and restore normal function and correct appearance resulting from injury or accident. Whereas the first reason may be voluntary for patients, the second one may be mandatory. These surgeries are called cosmetic and reconstructive surgery respectively.

Practitioners are likely to work in clinics or hospitals and their operations are restricted in sterile surgical units. Many hours are spent standing, which requires one to maintain physical fitness. Surgical procedures vary in the amount of time they last. How much one makes in a year is highly dependent on the location, experience, and specialty. Major subspecialties include microsurgery, aesthetic, burn, craniofacial, hand, and pediatric plastic surgery.

Diseases or congenital abnormalities and accidents usually result in deformities and it the responsibility of these surgeons to examine, assess, and diagnose them. Once the examination has been done function and appearance are restored through invasive surgery. Physical appearance is then improved through elective surgery after invasive surgery has been done. Additionally, these surgeons order and run tests for diagnostic purposes and prescribe treatment and medications to patients.
