A spinal cord rehab team may consist of a group of professionals you and the ones you care about may be working with in the event of an injury. In general terms, there will be three teams the survivor would work with. These include the support team, the therapist team, and the medical team. Read on to know more about their roles one by one. The orthopedic spine surgeon or neurosurgeon leads the medical team. He is normally responsible for acute care as soon as the incidence is reported and devise a plan to take care of long term rehabilitation.

Other specialist on the medical team might include a physiotherapist, a rehabilitation nurse, a dietician and a psychologist. For example, the physiotherapist coordinates all aspects of the survivors rehabilitation including supervising and working with a variety of physical therapist who are knowledgeable about spinal cord injury.

The coordinator of all nursing care and one who answers the questions bothering the survivor and his/her relatives concerning spinal injury is the rehabilitation nurse. Due to the injury, the patient would require a totally different form of diet in order to speed up the process and as such a dietician will come in handy to handle such requirement in a professional manner. After all said and done, for the survivor and family to be able to handle the new phase of life, the psychologist will be available for any advice or counseling.

It is the therapist's responsibility to work with the patient during the rehabilitation stage so that the survivor can be returned to optimum health. For the survivor to have the best of strength, endurance and motion, the physical therapist must help the survivor. Apart from that, he or she must help the patient to be able to go through the process of locating the wheelchair, transferring to it, sitting in it, and operating it.

If there are speech or communication problems, then a speech therapist would be an important team member. A recreational therapist helps to determine the survivor's function level and then introduces him or her to activities that would bring back independence and fun back to the survivor's life. Finally, a respiratory therapist would be brought on-board for survivors who are having difficulty breathing as a result of spinal cord injury.

The final group is the support team. Those who constitute this team are variety of specialists who are ready to put in their best to ensure the patient handles life well after going through treatment. Social workers are always ready to assist in areas such as relationships, lifestyle changes, and finances.

The case manager's responsibility is to liaise between the patient and insurance providers. When it comes to work options, the vocational counselor assists the survivor to handle such area well, just like the way rehabilitation engineer designs assisted aids for use by the survivor. So far as treatment is concerned, from the initial stage to rehabilitation, the teams would determine how successful the entire treatment become.
