Some Great Ideas For Turning Empties Into Wine Bottle Candles

By Sarah Perry

Good wine and romantic lighting seem to go hand in hand. At some point creative individuals decided to combine the two separate items into one. This idea is attractive for a number of reasons. Wine lovers committed to recycling, and those who find the cost of candle arrangements excessive, both benefit. Wine bottle candles are a good use for empties and don't require expensive candles.

There are certain parts of different projects that are common to most of them. This includes removing the labels, which may the hardest and most time consuming part of the project. It can be accomplished by soaking the bottles in water and then scraping the label off with a razor. It may take a few soakings before all the residue is gone.

Experts suggest you save a number of bottles before you begin your first project. If you are going to attempt to cut the glass, it may take several tries before you get it leveled just right. After you have done this a number of times, you will probably find a technique that makes sense to you. Even experienced craftsmen go through empties before they get the edges they want.

If taking on candle projects turns out to be something that really interests you, you might want to invest in a scoring tool. They cost about fifty dollars. A lot of craftsmen just purchase a simple glass cutting tool at a local home improvement store. They are usually less than ten dollars. If you are inserting a candle into a bottle, serious craftsmen caution you to avoid picking up lit bottles from the top. They will be hot and can cause a burn.

If your first project is a success, you might decide to try creating an arrangement of bottled lights. To maximize the interest and attractiveness, you should vary the heights of the bottles. You might experiment with different colors and tones of glass to create a display. You can also vary the candle styles with some inside bottles and others inserted in the tops.

The lights can also be used effectively outdoors by hanging the bottles on a line or two across the yard or patio. You cut off the bottom of the bottle, and then drill two holes into a votive glass. Attach chains through those holes, pull them up through the top of the bottle, and attach a decorative ring so you can hang it.

Even if you don't consider yourself a master craftsman, you can still create interesting candle displays. It might be something as simple as the old tried and true candle dripping over bottle project. It might seem cheesy, but it could be fun to mark special occasions with colored candles. Eventually you could have bottles full of memories to enjoy.

There is nothing wrong with purchasing beautiful candles that are already arranged, scented, and very expensive. Making your own with materials you already have on hand is probably more fun however. Not only will you release your creative instinct, but you will be helping the environment by recycling your old wine bottles.
