The very first action of this creature called man when it first appeared on this planet was to look for something to eat. No problem. Nature provided it with lush vegetation and plenty of wild game to hunt for meat. But the current situation is now different. Not only does it eat to meet the bodily requirement, it eats for pleasure. The main source of human consumption is the other life forms on earth in plants and animals both in land and in oceans. The land provided fruits and vegetables. Wild berries were the first to be identified as edible when man saw bears eating berries. Fruits from trees that are eaten by birds gave early peoples and idea that if it does not harm other creatures that eat it then it should be safe.

Meat is a cradle of protein that the human body badly needs. Various wild creatures were prime targets for humans especially the small ones like dear and pigs. At a certain point in history, wild beasts were tamed and bred within the vicinity of human activity. Goats and sheep were among the largest herds that were zealously guarded by tribe members.

Early peoples were intelligent in that settlements were made always near the river banks. This is true in parts of ancient civilization. History is replete with this tendency as seen in the settlements made along the Hindu river valley, the Nile, the amazon, and the Yangtze. Modern agronomists agree that soil along rivers is always fertile.

The domestication of wild animals was a milestone in the history of peoples. Breeding and cross breeding eliminated the need capture and kill for meat. The herd just had to be fed and watered as with the crops that were cultivated in the area. People also had no problem with sanitation as water was readily available for whatever purpose it served.

Large scale farming and livestock breeding is now being practiced all over the world to meet the nutritional requirements of population. Stretches of wheat fields span great areas as far as the eyes can see. Cornfields blot the landscape. Once harvested these are transported in bulk by huge rigs that crisscross across the continents towards the cities.

Farm products, be a crop or meat produces are hauled cross country from farms and distribution in markets inside cities. These end up in wet markets and department stores spread all over the city. A large portion is delivered to restaurant and hotels to be cooked and served to patrons. Modern cuisine has a wide array of influences.

Festivals are events where food runs aplenty. These are seasonal activities done by a community to commemorate a significant event or to honor a patron saint as in Hispanic fiestas. Special occasions like birthdays are celebrated with food for visitors and guests. The rich and the famous are more likely to engage in social fine dining.

Nowadays people eat more than what is required for the body, the reason for so many early deaths caused by obesity, diabetes, and other illnesses that are related to over eating. The huge woodlands that are habitats for creatures have slowly disappeared as more land is allocated for the agriculture. Conservation and preservation of the natural world has now been given priority by nations.
