Admission into medical schools normally needs individuals to possess a bachelor degree from a suitable course. Graduation from the medical school takes four years. Most individuals normally proceed to a residency program which normally takes three to four years. Some of the fields in which individuals can complete residency include internal medicine, pediatrics and gynecology.

After completing residency, one proceeds to complete their training by taking a 3-year fellowship program. With a license, one can start unsupervised practice.

This demand has been geared by population increase and the continued aging of the American population. The increase in population and aging are expected to lead to increase in demand for medical services.
