Here Is Information On Compounding Pharmacy In Ocala FL

By Douglas Murray

Drug compounding is a procedure used by approved pharmacists in developing pharmaceutical compounds like drugs. The drugs are compounded so as to satisfy specific patient needs that may not be catered for by the drugs available in the market. This patient could be an animal or a person. The procedure is made up of packaging, mixing, assembling, labeling and altering medical ingredients just to mention a few. This is what any compounding pharmacy in Ocala FL is all about.

Pharmaceutical preparation is carried out or supervised by a licensed pharmacist pursuant to a prescription from a medical practitioner. The pharmacist must be licensed by the state board. On the other hand, manufacturing of drugs can only be done after being approved by the FDA. Before any drug goes into production, it must be investigated and tested thoroughly by the FDA to ensure that it is effective and safe for use.

To this effect, approval by the state board is required in for one to be able to compound drugs while FDA approval is necessary in manufacturing. Manufacturing involves mass production of drugs since they are intended for use by the masses. Once produced, the medicines are then wholesaled to healthcare officers, pharmacies and hospitals among other entities, which in turn retail to end users. Only entities that are approved by federal and state authorities are allowed to sell manufactured drugs.

Compounded drugs cannot be sold to other entities in order to be distributed to end consumers. In fact, the drugs are not supposed to be commercialized. They are supposed to be produced for a specific patient or patients in exact dosage. The surplus that remains cannot be sold to other patients or commercialized because it is illegal.

Most pharmacies engage in compounding of some sort. However, to be effective at producing compounded drugs, the pharmacy must make investment in the appropriate training and equipment. The workforce needs to be trained effectively and this is usually done in medical school. Learners can choose to specialize in compounding while still in school so that they can venture into the field in their career.

The equipment that is needed for the process include graduated cylinders for measuring liquids being used and mortar and pestle for grinding ingredients. Materials are mixed using spatulas while balances weigh the materials to get proper proportions. All the work is done on ointment slabs. Drugs are produced in all forms, including capsules, liquids, creams, and ointments that can be swallowed, applied on the skin, or injected into the blood or muscles.

The US has the largest count of compounding pharmacies across the globe. The count stands at approximately fifty six thousand pharmacies. Around 7,500 pharmacies major in production of compounded medicines. This means they majorly compound medicines. As such, there is easy access to these kinds of drugs.

It is mandatory for a patient to obtain a prescription from a licensed doctor before they can buy compounded medicine. This is a requirement that is meant to protect consumers and to prevent abuse of the industry. A pharmacist is not supposed to compound drugs to patients without verifying the validity of the prescription provided.
