Hints For Choosing The Right Outdoor Water Fountains For Your Yard

By Dawn Williams

Many outdoor water fountains commonly are not crafted equally. A still water fountain like you would find in small containers, birdbaths or small ponds often offer a sense of reflection and peace. Active fountains though will have something ponds do not; action, sound and movement. These three items assist people with focusing their mind to see a greater picture of what is going on. They also give a somber focal point for the objects surrounding them.

There are generally three different types of outside fountains that people purchase. The bubbling or cascading types are where the water moves up through a container and slowly runs down the sides. The spill over fountain where the water-flow generally runs out some form of spout and falls into a container or basin. The jet type where the liquid is forced up under pressure like a jet and falls in a stream to the catch basin.

There is also a sub-type called a disappearing fountain. This is where after the liquid enters the catch basin, it spills over the sides onto the ground often covered by medium or large stones and seems to vanish. In reality is flowing into a container that is underground where it is pumped back up to top again where it spills over the sides. All three fountain types can be made into this sub-type.

The most versatile and generally the most suited for most people's home gardens is the bubbling or cascading fountain. They generally have a single fluid source located somewhere under the surface of the top container. These are typically made from glazed pots. The liquid softly bubbles on the surface and rolls over the edges into a bottom basin. These are great for smaller areas and generally only make a soft gurgling sound.

With most spilling fountains the top basin is raised and a little smaller than bottom basin this makes the waterfall make more noise. You should try listening to some before deciding to purchase this type. The louder sound could be energizing for most people so they are generally best put in areas where they are conversation pieces.

A jet type fountain is best for larger spaces where the sound will not be blocked and so it can be heard at a distance. This jetting makes them quite dramatic and inspirational. There are smaller and simple ones that can be placed into small areas that shoot tiny droplets creating almost the same effect.

Many of these designs have a common thread, picking which one you want boils down to personal taste. Look over the area where it will be placed and what different effects you want. There is no actual wrong style, many just seem to go better in different places than other ones.

Most good quality outdoor water fountains are something that will entertain and relax families for years. If you find you are short of cash there are many ways to build water features that often look as good or better than store bought ones. You can always search the web and find countless tutorials for building them.
