Layton Sciatica Issues Helped With Chiropractic Therapy Services

By Frank Carbart

Doctors of chiropractic medicine often assist those who suffer from sciatica. The latter is characterized by a shooting pain or burning sensation that typically originates in the lower back and travels down one or both legs. The pain and discomfort varies in frequency and intensity, and may be constant or intermittent. Because this can adversely affect one's quality of life, some individuals suffering from this disorder contact a Layton chiropractor.

Sciatica is frequently compared to a toothache, as the latter is also described as a sharp, shooting pain. Some people experience tingling sensations or pins and needles instead of overt pain, however. These sensations are often described as a kind of burning feeling in the affected limb.

Disorders believed to result in sciatic pain include misaligned vertebrae, diabetic neuropathy, bulging or herniated discs, tumors, and chronically poor posture. In some cases, individuals who place a wallet in their back pocket and do not remove it when in a seated position may develop sciatica.

Piriformis syndrome may also result in the aforementioned condition. The piriformis muscle is found in the lower back where it attaches to the thigh bone. Its primary function is to allow an individual to rotate his or her hip. The sciatic nerve is located beneath this muscle, making it susceptible to injury from various accidents, or conditions such as arthritis of the hip. If the muscle goes into a spasm, the sciatic nerve may become pinched.

Sciatic nerve compression may cause loss of sensation in some individuals. It may also lead to insomnia. When this nerve is compressed, an individual may even experience paralysis of specific muscle groups or one limb.

Depending on the reason for the patient's symptoms, various types of therapy may be offered by a Layton chiropractor. These may include ultrasound, spinal adjustments, or hot and cold packs. No matter why one is experiencing such symptoms, consulting a professional is wise course of action.
