Children often need a calm activity before nap time, or while you finish cleaning up after a meal. Create busy-bags ahead of time, store separately from their normal toy rotation, and allow your child to use their imagination and creativity!

Race Car and Race Track

* Stickers

They may only draw lines and circles, but they'll have an amazing story to tell you.

You can teach your child how to draw numbers, shapes and scenery by letting them trace what you draw.

Your child may enjoy being traced too! Ask them to lay down while you trace an outline of their body. Both of you can then color in their shirt, shorts, and shoes.

* Stickers

* Markers

Important concepts for your child: You and your child can create sticker buildings, for example, a hospital helps sick people get better, a fire station is where fire trucks are stored, and a garage stores our car and bicycles. You can also discuss street safety with your child, such as what street lights mean, when to cross a cross walk, and sounds you may hear.

While your child is drawing they will learn shapes, numbers, colors, pieces of clothing, body parts, and how to follow directions.

Inform your child what you are drawing and its characteristics, such as, a triangle has three sides.

2. Running may seem like the only way your child gets from one point to another! Put on your swimsuit, sunscreen and add a water-filled sponge ball to a game of catch!

* Stack of Post-its

*Crayons

Your child's take-aways: While your child is drawing, you can ask questions about their art and have them tell you a story. Encouraging creativity and storytelling allows your child to use their imagination! Displaying the work helps children to show case their skills.

Your child will love being your helper! Dig an area where the garden will be located or use a few planting pots.

Have fun planting seeds of the child's choice and they'll love watching their plants grow over the summer.

Enjoy smelling flowers, carving pumpkins on Halloween, or cooking with home-grown herbs for a meal. Don't forget to water your plants!

* 10-15 craft sticks

You and your child can color the craft sticks with a marker or buy colored craft sticks, then ask your child to sort them by color. A variation for older children is to number the sticks and sort in numerical order. Your child may also want to build with the craft sticks and that's okay!

What your child learns: While sorting, your child will learn counting, colors, and organizing.

Your child may have peaked interest in one activity that could last for hours but another activity may last only minutes.

That's okay because you are spending quality time together playing, teaching, and learning!
