Cooking can be done using different types of methods and heat sources. Major heat sources are in form of electric deck oven, conveyor belt oven, and coal- or wood-fired brick ovens. The last kind of oven is confined to expensive restaurants only because it is very costly and luxurious. The prepared dough is placed over the source of heat to cook.

Paddles referred to as peels are employed in sliding pizzas into the oven if the heat source is a deck oven. Baking then happens directly on heated bricks. Cornmeal is sprinkled over the peel so that dough can slide easily. Barbecue grills are also being used to make this meal while in Chicago-style types, pans are used.

The bottoms of the flatbread are called crusts and they are made differently in different variants. Crusts are very thin in some variants while in some they are made very thick. Most crusts are made plain, but it is not uncommon to find some that are seasoned with herbs, garlic, and cheese among other ingredients.

If the right ingredients are used and the preparation method is good, the meal that results is a healthy one. However, because many US restaurant chains continue to use unhealthy ingredients, the meal has come under severe criticism. Fats, salt, and food energy are used in huge quantities, which makes it unhealthy.
