Nutritional Importance Of Fava Beans

By Brenda Cox

These are the most common and widely used legumes for a very long time since they are very easy to grow. Fava beans are employed mostly as cover crops because they take part in nitrogen fixation because they are also legumes. However, they can survive harsh environmental conditions including freezing temperature and high salt content in the soil, unlike other crops.

Young leaves are usually very delicious and easy to harvest when still growing. The pot herbs can be made from the immature pods. The outer cover is removed by boiling them or sometimes after they are removed from the pods they can be fried to give them a crunchy texture.

Apart from being rich in protein, it has a lot of other nutritional importance which bring about health benefits to humans. They also contain vitamin k among other types of vitamins. They also contain a high folate content which is good for energy metabolism in the body and also boosts the nervous system as well as the development of healthy blood cells.

Broad grain has been known to be very important in the diet of a pregnant woman. Mostly this is usually associated with the reduction of the risks of congenital disabilities. This is due to the abundant folate content in them. Consumption of these gains during the first few week of pregnancy when the fetus is developing is the best time.

Manganese is also a major and essential component that is mainly found in grains. It is important in the formation of bones and prevents calcium deficiency in the body leading the formations of very strong bones formation. Manganese, together with other elements such as copper and zinc can prevent the occurrence of diseases such as osteoporosis.

Magnesium, an element known to eradicate the risks of cardiac diseases is also found in broad grains. Many people depend on the food supplements as a source of magnesium since the body cannot produce enough of it. Thus through these grains, one can have them in sufficient amount. They reduce the blood pressure thus cause the decrease in risks of heart attacks. This activity is enhanced mostly when consumed with other supplements such as vegetables and fruits.

Asides that, they are also known to boost the immune system to fight diseases. Copper in broad grains maintains the health of the blood cells. They enhance the activities of white blood cells by acting as free radicle scavengers thus preventing tumor and cancer cells formation. The body cannot produce enough copper on its own to help in these activities but can be supplemented with food. They have been associated with the control of other diseases such as the Parkinson disease.

However, there are others who do not eat these grains since they affect their health. There are medications that when taken cannot allow a person to eat these seeds because they may have the negative reaction. Some genetic factors have also been associated with the inability to consume these beans. Favism is as a result of consumption of broad grains by people suffering from a genetic disorder that does not allow them to eat them.it is characterized by hemolytic anemia where white blood cells are destroyed at a high rate.
