By Paul Wood

The areas surrounding the three North American Great Lakes are always great places to go on tour. They have an ample supply of plants, wildlife and recreational areas. If you are set to tour the area soon, here are a few interesting things to do in Sault Ste Marie.

You should know that the local weather is renowned for its unpredictability. With variations sometimes catching many by surprise, the tour firms in the locality have spread their packages to cater for different climatic conditions. This notwithstanding, it is imperative that you carry warm cloths to safeguard yourself against the uncertain weather.

One top favored outdoor activity is rock climbing. Some adventure groups offer visits to some of the best ice and rock formations in the area. The winter months are best suited for ice climbing whereas summer is great for rock climbing.

Biking is another top activity to engage in. There is a local dirt park used specifically for biking. Many biking enthusiasts visit it to hone their skills in this outdoor sport. A few hours of the activity is all you need to improve your handling skills. The park is always open beginning May and all through the summer.

If you are enthusiastic about fishing, head to the St. Marys River Rapids. The river acts as the drainage channel of Lake Superior, with Lake Huron serving as the outlet. The rapids are always flocked with various fish species. They include brown trout, whitefish, pink salmon, rainbow trout, Atlantic salmon, steelhead and Chinook. If you do not have any fishing gear, rentals are available on site.

The Agawa Canyon Tour Train is also often highly sought after. The train snakes past breathtaking landscapes as it heads north away from the city. Awe inspiring rivers and lakes dot the surrounding landscape, with the Agawa Canyon being the final stop on the tour.

The stop time at the canyon is usually two hours, which is just enough time to check out the fantastic surroundings. A lookout platform lies 250 feet above the train tracks. The pristine nature of the location is further complemented by four majestic waterfalls.

Those who love swimming would do well with some scuba diving. You can get all the training you need to dive comfortably at the nearby Sault Scuba Center. There is a whole new world to explore below the water, and you should be a part of it.

A visit to the Runway Park should cap your tour. Here, you get to learn different racing techniques using rally cars, ATVs and bikes. The site owners have also built a bathroom facility, canteen and campground onsite. Without a doubt, this should be your go to place for that weekend family camping trip you have always thought about.

Ensure you establish your budget needs beforehand. It is always a good idea to travel with extra money to meet potential shortfall. Some sites do not accept credit cards, so this is something to bear in mind too.
