The Special Groups Of People That Need Regular Visits To The Frisco Optometrist

By Jessica Phillips

Most people make the mistake of thinking that because they visited an eye doctor once and got a 20/20 vision rating, they do not need to care about the condition of their eyes. As a result, small health problems lead to the deterioration of visual health to a point where it causes vision loss. It is unfortunate that more than 70 percent of the people who suffer visual loss get it from causes that could have been prevented. A Frisco Optometrist recommends that these groups of people should have eye checks on a regular basis.

The first people who need regular eye checkups are diabetics. When you have diabetes, your body is unable to regulate glucose levels. As a result excess glucose flows in the blood vessel in the eyes, it is converted into a glassy substance which is deposited in the cornea, forming cataracts. Regular eye checkups will determine if you are developing cataracts and treat them.

Glaucoma also causes a huge percentage of vision loss cases in the country. Glaucoma is a disease which attacks the optic nerve causing it to degenerate slowly till the patient loses their vision. The most common type of glaucoma does not come with any symptoms, which makes it completely impossible to detect unless you follow up on regular eye examinations.

The third leading cause of blindness is macular degeneration. This one is also age-related. The disease affects the macula, which is the part of the retina that helps with the central vision of the eye. More than 80 percent of people over the age of 60 can blame their loss of vision to macular degeneration.

High blood pressure is a condition which is caused by a number of factors including high cholesterol levels and ion imbalance in the blood. Patients with chronic blood pressure issues are more susceptible to developing blindness because the constricted vessels in the eyes tend to bleed or swell, which eventually leads to loss of vision. The only way to manage vision problems associated with high blood pressure would be to have regular checkups and mitigate as problems develop.

Another group which needs regular visits to the optometrist is little children. Unlike adults, children cannot tell whether they are having problems seeing assume things that are out of the ordinary to be normal. The only way that you can find out if your child has hidden vision problems is if you took them for regular optic checkups.

Another group of people that need regular checkups are those that spend most of their day staring at a computer screen. The blue light which comes from the electronics is known to cause dryness of the eyes and degeneration of the retina. Checkups will show if you need to take measures such as anti-glare glasses to preserve your vision.

These are the special groups of people who constantly need eye checkups. Note that even if you think your eyesight is 20/20, it never hurts to visit an optometrist every once in a while. Competent eye health experts will perform the necessary tests and ensure that you do not have complications lurking beneath the cover of normal eyesight.
