Tips For Making Vegan Holiday Recipes

By Larry Allen

Hosting a family get together during the holidays may be a challenge when you know one or several people do not eat meat. After all, the standard meal during these festivities includes meats like turkey, chicken, and ham. What can you do when there are people in the family who do not eat meat at all? Rather than fret about what to serve them, you could instead try out some new ideas that do not contain animal products. These vegan holiday recipes tend to be easy to prepare and do not cost a lot of money.

When you think about the time of year when the most popular holidays arrive, you may turn your attention to produce that comes into season. In particular, gourds and squash are harvested during the fall and winter months. Everything from acorn squash to spaghetti squash and pumpkins are available for low prices. These examples are also things that vegans can eat without the fear of consuming animal products.

Further, they may be prepared in a number of different ways. The simplest way to cook them involves baking them in the oven. You have to slice them open, remove the insides and seeds, and then salt and pepper them. Instead of using real butter, you can add margarine or vegetarian butter that does not have any animal products in it.

You then bake them until the flesh is soft and can be scooped out with a spoon. You may place them in a serving dish and mash them together like potatoes. You also can add more margarine, oil, or other seasonings for flavor.

Mushrooms are another option for replacing meat for these individuals. In particular, portabella mushrooms are large and meaty. They have a lot of flavor and can satisfy anyone's appetite because of how large and filling they are. They also can be found in grocery stores year round and do not cost a lot of money.

Making them involves removing the stem from the underside and then cleaning the cup of the mushroom. After that, you can season them with oil, salt, and pepper. You have the option of frying them like steaks or baking them like any other kind of meat. You might then slice them into strips or serve them whole.

Finally, you have the option of serving a meat replacement called tofurkey. Tofurkey is made from tofu and is shaped to look like a turkey. However, there is no meat in this dish. Tofurkey is ideal for roasting or frying. It has a texture that is similar to meat. You could add seasonings like onion, salt, pepper, sage, and others to make it more palatable and also to infuse some of the seasonal flavors that come with the holidays.

These are some of the ideas available to you when you want to make a vegan friendly holiday meal. The people who avoid eating meat do not have to feel left out at mealtime. Instead, they may welcome your efforts to make things they can eat and will find enjoyable. Other people at the dinner table also might be surprised at how good these dishes taste.
