Adult Acne Can Be Devastating

By Karen Miseneer

Almost everyone in the world has been afflicted with the most common skin condition known as acne. It predominantly affects teenagers but can also be seen in the older population as well. There are some known causes of acne, and propionibacterium is a major reason for the problem to recur repeatedly. Here we shall take a look at how this condition can be managed at home and what treatment options are available to treat it.

What factors contribute to acne in adults?

The skin contains gland called sebaceous glands that secrete a thick oily substance called sebum. When sebum traps bacteria in the pores due to blockages; this can be a cause of acne. Inflammation is the result, and acne forms in the skin because of the excess bacteria. In men, acne occurs due to all production of testosterone and in women it can occur during pregnancy or menopause.

Treating adult acne

There are a number of different methods that are now available to treat adult acne. Unfortunately, treating it can be quite difficult and many times it can fail. Certain simple measures can be taken that can help reduce breakouts and eventually lead to the acne disappearing.

1. Over-the-counter cleansing products are one solution that many people try, purchasing these in many retail markets. The sebum within the pores is cleaned out using these solutions.

2. Topical creams are another option, with ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide. Redness can be lessened, and the spread and amount of acne can be brought down effectively. Dry skin is a result of this option for some patients, and it causes issues like itching or flaking for them.

3. Some people benefit from treatments of antibiotics that a dermatologist or physician may prescribe. Clindamycin is an example of a quality topical antibiotic cream that has been effective for many. Tetracycline is another kind that is prescribed for some patients as an oral medication, in a longer treatment course. People need to know that tetracycline treatments can stain teeth as a side effect, this should be taken into consideration.

Some effective and simple home remedies

The basic act of washing the skin with warm water and soap is an age old method to reduce acne. There is a drying effect that hot water can have on skin, so this is not advised. Another cause for acne can be the damage done by rubbing the face too hard with a towel to dry it after washing, do this delicately. Some people find that there are certain triggers for their acne and it is essential that these are considered.

Treatments for more serious acne

These days there are newer treatments that have emerged in the field of dermatology that help manage patients with adult acne. Treatments can include laser therapy, blue light therapy and chemical peels. There are the simpler methods that a doctor or dermatologist will apply before recommending that anyone has any of these more intensive treatment for acne.
