Native Woodland Plants Add A Rustic And Natural Touch To A Property

By Gene Bush

Plants that thrive in wooded areas of North America are famous for their rustic, natural appearance. Furthermore, those who invest in such plants need not be concerned that they will overrun the property or threaten other botanicals. Those in search of the ideal native woodland plants will be pleased to find there are multiple variations from which to choose. Some popular selections include the following:

Trinity lilies, also called wood lilies, are small perennial plants that thrive throughout the North American woodlands. They reach a height of approximately eight inches, and produce broad leaves adorned with large white flowers. The latter change color from spring to fall, shifting from white to pink, and ultimately to a dark burgundy shade.

Leatherwood is a type of shrub that thrives in the Eastern woodland sections of North America from Canada to northern Florida. Such perennials typically grow to a width and height of 4 feet by 4 feet. The shrubs have hardy stems and pale green leaves that change to dark gold in the fall.

Another flower that thrives in wooded areas is the Indian pink. The latter are found from eastern Texas to Indiana, in the southern United States. Also called worm grass or woodland pinkroot, they reach twelve inches in height when conditions are normal. Their stems are typically tall, and adorned with burgundy or yellow blooms that feature a unique star shape.

Another beautiful selection is the white dogtooth's violet. This botanical is called by various names, including white trout lily and adder tongue. These herbaceous perennials grow in many different wooded areas from East Texas to the southern half of Ontario. They flower in late April, thrive well in the shade, and grow to be one foot tall.

Native woodland plants are an excellent choice for anyone who wishes to add a rustic, natural look to his or her property. They can be purchased at local nurseries or even ordered online. Regardless of the specific type of plant one chooses, he or she will certainly be happy with the aesthetic appeal they add to the landscape.
