Congenital Syphilis Infection Signs, Symptoms And Treatment

By Wesley Lyon

Congenital syphilis is an infection that mostly occurs during childbirth. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that is spread via any sexual contact with an infected partner. If the mother happens to be infected and does not seek treatment, the disease affects the fetus. The disease manifests itself in various ways including Mulberry molars in the fetus. This leads to various complications. Inborn syphilis mostly manifests during birth. This is in children who are born of a mother who has syphilis. Most times, the disease can lead to stillbirths, miscarriages, premature delivery or even the death of the baby. Those who survive are destined to live with certain complications. The symptoms increase after the baby is born, and they can take up various forms.

Although gonorrhea and syphilis are the most serious of the sexually transmitted diseases, there are a number of others that cause considerable discomfort or embarrassment. Venereal warts, for example, can be acutely painful. Pubic lice (crab lice) cause intensive itching.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection, and an extremely contagious one. An estimated 2.5 million Americans contract this disease annually.

Scientific study shows that it is important for pregnant women to attend antenatal testing and screening to detect such diseases. When these symptoms are diagnosed prior to the birth of the baby, medical help can be administered, which will help in the treatment of the disease, thus the child is born healthy. If the symptoms are not recognized before birth, the child exhibits insufficient feeding habits, which will lead to loss in weight and rhinorrhea.

Neuosyphilis has four different forms: the first is asymptomatic, the second is meningovascular, the third is tabes dorsalis and the fourth is a general paresis. The tabes dorsalis symptoms are a pheripheral neuropathy, pain in the extremities, incontinence and unsteady movements.

The prevention of inborn syphilis is only possible if the mother undergoes a series of treatment before the child's birth. This ensures the unborn child is not infected with syphilis and therefore prevents the occurrence of these unpleasant outcomes. The treatment of pregnant women with syphilis is usually most effective if conducted before the 4th month of pregnancy. The fetus is likely to get the disease within the first trimester of the pregnancy. Therefore, treatment should be administered early.

If you suspect that you have a sexual infection do not hesitate to tell your partner(s) and to visit your doctor or a clinic immediately. Sexually transmitted diseases can be cured only with prescribed courses of drug therapy. Never attempt to treat these diseases yourself. Above all, do not let fear or embarrassment stand in the way of receiving medical care.
