Egg Donation Can Help You Conceive

By Nelson McNeill

If a couple is having problems conceiving even after trying procedures like in vitro fertilization, they can choose to use donor eggs. These eggs or embryos allow infertile women to conceive and have a child. You may be a good candidate for egg donation if you have a problem such as premature ovarian failure. This condition is characterized by menopause starting earlier than usual.

You can also consider ovum donation if you have low quality eggs as a result of reduced fertility or if you have a genetic disorder that can be passed on to your child. The ovum donation procedure is more effective than other types of assisted reproduction procedures. Most donors remain anonymous but you and your spouse can seek to know the lady who donated her ovum to you.

There are legal procedures that you have to complete in order to use this assisted reproduction procedure. If you get an egg from a person you know, she may want to see the child or know how the baby is doing after he or she is born. If you know the donor, it is imperative for you to sign a contract, which states that the baby born from the donated ovum is your legitimate child even if the woman who donated it is a close relative or friend.

Even though finding a donor on your own can be faster than going through a fertility clinic, you have to interview her yourself. This is more demanding than having her evaluated and screened by a professional. Donors have to be tested for diseases like HIV and genetic disorders. If you choose to use the services of a fertility clinic, you should find out if it has donors who are already screened.

In some fertility clinics the waiting list for donated eggs can be long. If you are facing such a situation, you can choose to find a donor though an ovum donor registry or agency. Ovum donor agencies usually screen donors extensively and provide prospective parents with details about the medical history, education and background of the donor. Some agencies have strict age requirements. They only accept eggs from women who are younger than 26.

Several steps are involved in the ovum donation process. They include initiation, sync up, taking hormones, ovarian ultrasound, egg collection, egg fertilization, transferring the embryo and testing. During initiation, the egg recipient is evaluated and then starts taking hormones to prepare her body for the donated egg. If her ovary is working well, the recipient is required to take estrogen and progesterone so that her menstrual cycle can coincide with that of the ovum donor.

The ovum donor also receives hormone treatments in order to induce superovulation. The eggs are collected through a small tube that is inserted through the vaginal canal. They are then fertilized and after a few days, the embryo will be implanted in your uterus. You will continue taking hormones for about ten weeks after the procedure.

Couples can also opt for embryo implantation. This involves using an embryo that was frozen after other prospective parents underwent an IVF treatment. If you choose to use donor eggs, you have to pay for the cost of your procedure as well as that of the donor. It is important to inquire if your insurance policy offers coverage for an egg donation procedure.
