Raising Irish Black Cattle For Sale

By Georgia Diaz

Irish black cattle were introduced into the United States in the 1960's and 1970's by a genetic scholar named Maurice Boney. By mating his perfect beef females with imported Friesian sires he founded the breed. Today you can find many ranches that have Irish black cattle for sale. For his experiment he used a closed herd and qualified the genes scientifically. The breeding was controlled for over fifty years and was trademarked in 1990 to ensure the purity of the stock.

When you choose to raise this type of cattle you will gain many advantages over other ranchers. The life span is long and the bulls are still siring calves years after maturity. If you wish to improve the lines of your herd you can introduce a few head into it and ideally change the herd in one year. The strong genes bred into them dominate other breeds consistently. The bulls are raised with strict gene control and a closed book of sires. The lines are strictly maintained to produce the highest quality calves possible. Throw backs to undesirable traits are few.

Calves are almost identical when born. If you plan to sell them for slaughter they will have uniform size and stature and the cuts of meat will be juicy and tender for consumers. They show consistently high marbling and very low back fat for a high quality cut of meat. This constant line of quality will guarantee a good return on the money spent by you to raise them.

Cows mature early and are able to produce a calf at fourteen months. They have a large pelvis and will deliver unassisted. Their calves arrive with a vigorous desire to get up and begin eating as soon as possible.Cows will deliver every year with a good sire available.

Feed conversion is another ideal faction of this enterprise. You will find that you will spend less on feeding because their metabolism converts more feed to nutrition than the average cow. This is mainly due to the moderate size of the cow's frame. A herd of 120 half-breeds will cost the same as 100 head of any other type of steers to feed.

The ACCA controls the registration of this breed. If you want to register one with them you must first have it confirmed by DNA that is the off spring of a registered sire and cow. You are required to meet stringent fertility and reproduction requirements and you must never show the animal in a competitive arena. Any animal that cannot meet these standards consistently will be stricken from the registration books.

Becoming a member of the ACCA has advantages. As a member you should be allowed to vote on certain rules regarding the breed. You may receive a reduced registration fee and you can advertise on the ACCA website to sell your animals or services. Another benefit of membership is that you may be able to contribute to the developmental center for bulls.

There are many good reasons for raising Irish black cattle for sale. They are possibly the best investment you can make when deciding what traits are best for increasing herd size. They can also be counted on for producing a financially solid foundation for your future.
