How Is Chiropractic Therapy Practiced?

By Essie Osborn

The main principle related to chiropractic is that any changes to the function and structure of the body's skeleton and the structures that support it may affect a person's overall health. Chiropractors have traditionally placed focus on the spine, but they view all the joints, nerves and surrounding muscles as possible problem sources.

These practitioners state that the skeleton and the muscles in the body should not be thought of as separate parts to other sections of the body. The entire body should be viewed as a single unit as all the sections have a distinct role to play. Chiropractic therapy places particular emphasis on the spine as the nerves link other sections of the body with the spinal column, including all the internal organs.

If there is a misalignment in one section of your body, it will cause pain, however it may also affect other sections of your body. Let's say you are experiencing a problem with the lower section of your spine. To take this into account, the upper spinal portion will start working harder. This could cause you to suffer from headaches because of the strain you are enduring. You may start compensating for the lower back pain by walking incorrectly. This may eventually cause pain in your ankles or knees.

The nerves in your spinal region are connected to other parts in your body. This is the reason for symptoms in to appear in other parts of your body, such as pain or numbness in your legs. During your initial consultation with your chiropractor, an evaluation will be done of your overall health. This may involve a full physical examination. The practitioner will view the way you walk and stand, examine your spine, pelvis and head, and you may be asked to go for x-rays or scans, if necessary.

The adjustments that follow may be done while you are lying down, sitting, standing or a combination of all the positions. This is dependent on your symptoms and your chiropractor's judgment. During this therapy process, you may hear clicking as the joints in your spine are adjusted. This generally does not cause pain.

A range of adjustment methods may be used by the chiropractor. The practitioner will use various hand pressure methods, as well as special equipment. He or she may have to make use of wedges underneath your body or make use of special adjustable tables to help with the adjustments.

Your health conditions will be considered when the practitioner makes the decision on the techniques to be used. This is done to ensure your safety and comfort throughout the procedure. He or she will consider if you are showing signs of arthritis, circulation disorders, fractures and your age and body size will be taken into account. All previous medical procedures and your current medications will also be considered.

Chiropractors are considered to be primary contact practitioners. This indicates that they have the training to recognize the best treatment program for your situation. If your condition calls for a referral to another practitioner, your chiropractor will ensure that this is done successfully.
