One's diet is of critical importance when it comes to avoiding diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. The regular consumption of fish is one of the simplest ways in which anyone can boost the quality of their diet and prevent these and other diseases. Shoppers looking to buy salmon online have a convenient way to get one of the most inexpensive, nutrient-dense types of fish available.

Salmon are are a species of fish known as anadromous, that is to say, fish that begin life in fresh water, migrate to the sea, then return to fresh water in order to reproduce. Quite remarkably, individual fish have been tracked and found to return to the same spot they were born at. After reproduction the fish die, making way for the next generation.

There are several varieties of this fish, broadly classified by whether they are found in the Atlantic or Pacific oceans. The species vary in size and color, some are wild-caught, while others are farmed. The five most popular varieties to found in US stores are all pacific species: Chinook (or King), Sockeye (or Red), Coho (or Silver), Pink (or Humpback) and Chum (or Keta or Dog).

Each variety has its own characteristics, and they can vary considerably from one another in terms of flavor, color and size. Chinook are the biggest Pacific variety and many regard them as the best-tasting. They boast a relatively high fat content and flesh that can be pale or have a much deeper pink or red hue. The sockeye variety has rich red-colored flesh and correspondingly full flavor.

Coho are often known as "silvers" because of their very silvery skin. They have a more delicate texture than other varieties but a similar taste to Chinook. Pink salmon are the most common Pacific variety and have a light colored flesh and relatively low fat content. Chum - also known as "dog salmon" due to its dog-like teeth, is a smaller fish with medium-colored flesh.

Something all of the types have in common is the quantity of health-giving omega-3 fats contained in their flesh. This essential fatty acid has to be imbibed through food since it cannot be synthesized by the human body. It's importance for overall health is huge, and it is critical in particular for brain and heart health. It has also been shown to protect against cancer, diabetes, depression and dementia.

A study conducted by Pittsburgh University in 2007 found that subjects with a regular intake of omega-3 fats experienced significantly reduced symptoms of depression, impulsivity, anger and cynical thinking. Another study published in The British Medical Journal found that seniors who ate sea food or fish once a week or more had a significantly reduced risk of developing Alzheimer's and dementia.

Fish of all kinds is also a superior source of animal protein, and is loaded with vitamins and minerals. Among these are magnesium, selenium, potassium and vitamins A, D, B12 and B6. Overall, fish is easily one of the most nutritious foods available and everyone should almost certainly be eating more of it.
