Important Information On Artificial Insemination Couples Need To Understand

By Diana Saunders

A woman can only become pregnant after fertilization of her eggs. This process, however, can take place through either biological or artificial means. Biological fertilization takes place when the sperms of a male get into contact with those of a female during sexual intercourse. The artificial one, on the other hand, takes place when semen is introduced into the reproduction system of a female through physical means. Artificial insemination, AI, was initially used to upgrade the breeding patterns of domestic animals such as cows and pigs. Farmers therefore have been using the procedure to overturn their overall animal yields by assisting the animals with breeding issues.

An example is where the procedure is used in case the animals are too heavy to mate. Instead of letting the males mate in through a natural way their semen is transferred to the oviduct of a female. This method is also used for cross-breeding in order to get quality offspring with improved productivity. If the cross-breeding is done between a productive animal and the indigenous one, the production level of the offspring surpasses that of its mother.

There are also other conditions that would call for this procedure. They include; sickness, overweight and in-breeding. With the advancements in technology, it can now be carried out in human beings. Here too, the practice is used as the substitute for sexual intercourse between the man and woman. In humans, AI is primarily used for medical purposes. However, there are other reasons that would compel medics into using it.

Fertilization often fails when a woman has a problem with her immunity system. In such a case, the system reacts to the sperm as it would to a pathogen or bacteria. Therefore, the AI would be used as an alternative for getting a child. Often the fetus can develop outside the reproduction system of the woman.

An incubator is normally used as the artificial womb. Semen and Ova are then placed in the incubator and left to fertilize. The incubator provides the same conditions provided by a womb. As such, the semen and ova can fertilize and develop into a fetus. Basically, women are the primary recipients of AI.

In case the woman is having problems with the cervix, AI can be deployed to enable her have a child. Some of the common cervical problems include; endometriosis, scarring and cervix blockage by mucus deposits. With the help of the AI, however, such problems are just solvable.

Men are not exception to this methodology, especially the impotent ones. Research has revealed that sperms collected from one donor can serve even two women. However, these sperms are usually used in women whose partners are infertile.

In AI, sperms are obtained through two major means. A collection rubber could be used to obtain the sperms or the man is just allowed to masturbate. The former is only used during a biological intercourse. All these activities are carried out at the bank for sperms so as to ascertain the donor of the sperms.
