Many people are growing their own vegetables at home, and the numbers are increasing. It is the second most planted home crop in the US and very popular on English dinner tables. That is why so many people are asking about how to grow potatoes.

You can grow potatoes very easily if you follow few simple rules. Potatoes can grow virtually in any soil , and it makes a very good first crop to loosen the soil of a new land.

Even if you have no backyard, potatoes grow happily in containers or bags. So what is the first step? before you start you need to choose what type of potatoes you want to harvest.

Choosing The Potato Seed

Certified potato seeds are always recommended to grow over uncertified ones. The are kept in a pest free storage by the retailer and insures a much better harvest and a healthy disease free plant. You can buy certified seeds from garden supplies stores or online. Firm seeds that look healthy and has several eyes are the best.

Preparing The Seeds

You have the seeds ready, now what? now you have to prepare them for planting. Cut them to 1/2 inch pieces that has 2-3 eyes each. You can store the pieces in a warm place for few weeks before planting.

Potatoes will virtually grow anywhere. Do you have a backyard? Great. If you don't you can always plant them in a pot, a growing bag, straw box, old tyres ...etc. you get the idea. As a matter of fact, the bare minimum you need to grow potatoes is a potato seed and water.

Read some more about this new hobby online, or buy a book if you are serious about it. There are suppliers for certified seeds, growing bags and other things you might need, both online and locally. To get you feet wet, some shops offer a potatoes growing kit.
