Before a commodity can be considered as a safe toothpaste, several qualities and safety measures must be satisfied. Toothpastes are manufactured in form of pastes or thick gels and are used in combination with toothbrushes to keep teeth and the oral cavity aesthetical and healthy. They have to be capable of treating gingivitis and periodontal pockets while causing no trouble to the user. This document outlines some of the factors one must check out when buying toothpastes.

Most products have abrasives that are used to remove food particles and dental plaque during cleaning. The abrasive should not be very rough as to harm the gums and it must be tough enough to clean well. Dental plaque and calculus are the main cause of periodontal diseases and cavities in the mouth and hence it is important to remove them.

Typical abrasives are calcium carbonate, aluminium hydroxide, and various silicas, hydroxyapatites, and zeolites. Some abrasives cause erosion on enamels in some individuals. Erosion may be followed by a feeling of irritation. This makes it important to consult a doctor to discuss the most suitable option for someone.

Toothpastes have fluorine in various forms as an important ingredient against cavity formation. Fluorine entail benefits like improving formation of the enamel and gum bones but also has disadvantages. A perfect product need to contain fluorine in forms that are nontoxic to enamel, gums, teeth, and the body. Main forms include sodium monofluorophosphate, sodium fluoride, and olaflur among others.

It is worth knowing that swallowing fluorine in huge amounts can be harmful to health and therefore should be evaded. One needs to inspect the product to make sure that the total composition of fluorides does not surpass a given level as advised by a doctor. Checking percentage of water is important too because it assists to maintain chemicals in their right state.

Other substances contained in most toothpastes include surfactants, flavorants, remineralizers, and antibacterial agents among others. Surfactants are forming agents that help in distributing the paste during teeth brushing. Flavorants are mainly intended to encourage use of the product by clients. Antibacterial substances are included to prevent bacterial attacks. All these substances must be contained in the right amount and form for them to be safe.

A Safe toothpaste does not contain some of the miscellaneous products contained in low quality products. Miscellaneous chemicals include oxylitol, sorbitol, and glycerol which are sugar alcohols. They are meant to reduce sensitivity of a product on some people. Most of these miscellaneous additives are dangerous and should be used with caution
