Tips On Becoming A Natural Black Hair Care Of Cosmetology Instructor

By Mara Boone

There may be circumstances where a hairdresser has grown tired of hairdressing or wants to take on a new challenge. The hairdresser may ultimately decide to go back to school to enter a new career field. If the hairdresser decides to remain in the beauty industry a job as hairdressing or natural black hair care teacher may be a viable alternative.

Be a licensed hairdresser. In order to teach students an individual obviously needs to be knowledgeable about the trade. It normally takes a year to complete a hairdressing course, though some courses may be shorter or longer. After completing training, an individual must take an exam in order to apply for a hairdressing license. Someone who exclusively works with natural hair may or may not be required to have a license.

Get an instructor license. In some areas, a separate certificate or license is required to become a hairstyling instructor. The requirements to receive an instructor license vary from jurisdiction to jurisdictions. Examples of such requirements include completing a formal instructor program, passing a test or providing a letter of reference from a current hairstyling teacher. It may complete both hairstyling and instructor requirements at the same time.

Make preparations for looking for work. An instructor resume should be comparable to a hairstyling resume. Include any previous involvement with training people too, irrespective if it was outside of the beauty industry.

Beauty schools are a large employer of cosmetology instructors. These schools sometimes do not make job openings known to the public. Instead they rely on word of mouth, resumes sent to them as well as referrals from others in the industry to meet staffing needs. Networking at industry events may be beneficial to obtaining a position at a beauty school, particularly a larger one. Public schools and correctional facilities also employ cosmetology instructors; there may be a lot of competition to secure one of these positions.

Apply at a natural hair academy. A natural hair academy teaches students how to work with locks that have not been chemically relaxed. Styles often taught are braiding, twisting, locking and how to apply extensions. Someone with expertise in any of these techniques may want to apply for employment at an academy. Like at a beauty school, such an employment opportunity may not be advertised to the general public. Send out resumes and utilize networking contacts to secure a position.

Apply with a hair care company. Beauty companies are always coming up with new products and techniques. They hire people to go around to beauty schools, salons and trade shows to show hairdressers and sometimes the public how to use the product. Look to manufacturer websites, beauty websites and trade magazines for job postings.

Freelance. There may be individuals that are looking to learn basic hairdressing or braiding. These individuals are most commonly looking for skills for personal use as opposed to working professionally. Place notices on online classifieds sites to get clients.

Finding a job as a hairstylist or natural black hair care instructor may take a lot of time and effort. A freelance or part-time job may have to be taken initially. Hopefully, the experience gained from that employment leads to a full-time job.
