Understanding What Hashimotos Really Is

By Dr. Kevin

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is the inflammation of the thyroid gland. However, that doesn't tell you much, does it? If you're like me, you want to know why it became inflamed and what you can do about it.

So, why does your thyroid gland become inflamed? There are a couple of possibilities: it can be overworked or your body is attacking it.

Where overworking is the cause, there are two scenarios that can best describe it.

A) T4 hormones are not being converted to T3 by the body( this is a hormone stored and released by the body). Of all hormones, it is considered the most biologically active.

B) The second scenario is where a body becomes ineffective when it comes to using sugar and fat. It fails to use these energy sources as well as the substitute which is a thyroid hormone.

The first instance can best be described as a problem with conversion. This is because your body has refused to convert T4 hormone to its most active form known as T3. In the active state, it is the most used when it comes to operation and can be thought of as an energy source.

Well, if your body can't get enough of T3 to run properly, it will send a message to your brain telling it the body needs more. This message causes the thyroid to release more T4. However, at some point your thyroid runs out of hormone and it gets worn-out.

This process can cause inflammation.

The second cause is brought about by the inability of your body to use various sources of energy such as glucose and fat.

If it reaches such a point, each body now has to start looking for alternative sources of energy such as T3. However, it is only in a position to give a certain amount before it no longer has the capacity to do so.

Thyroiditis is however commonly caused by Hashimotos.

This is a condition that can best be described as a disorder with the autoimmune system. In an autoimmune disorder, the body will be attacking itself. In this particular case, your body will be attacking one particular part; your thyroid gland.

This attack on the thyroid causes the inflammation. Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to why this happens. However, you should know that there is something you can do about it.

Your doctor will most likely run tests and give you a pill, but this is not a complete treatment. Start by understanding your condition and what natural alternatives are available, including diet.

For a person with this condition, diet will play a big part in conversion of T4 in to T3. Supplements may also help, but it is recommended you start by dieting.

You must remember that Hashimotos is a problem with the immune system. Giving your body the nutrients it desires is the best way to support it.
