Steps To Follow When Planting Ginger Rhizomes

By William Myers

You will realize that almost all crops are similar when it comes to planting them. The difference only comes in due to the variation of their species. Some will have certain ways of planting. The Ginger Rhizomes are known to have a specific way of growing them since they grow from planting a section of its root. After a period of summer, it grows and harvested. Below is a detailed procedure one should follow when growing it.

First and foremost, one is required to cover the section of your garden with almost two-inch compost layer. Mix the compost with the soil by turning it together with the soil using a spade. There is need to select a section which is well drained and which receives partial shade. The area needs only to receive the required amount of sunlight. Also, the soil should be rich in nutrients.

Secondly, you need to cut fresh ginger root. It must be almost a two-inch section which you will be required to plant. Make sure you have cut a section containing a bud and one which resembles a small bump. Then, lay the roots in open ground but dry for some days. The preferable period needs to be one to two days to give the cuts some adequate time to cure and scab over.

After they are ready, pick them and dig some holes measuring almost half an inch. Place the ginger in the holes and ensuring that all buds face upwards. This will enhance their easy growth. Also, you have to make sure all holes are two to three inches away from each other in all directions. This is important through giving the roots an adequate space for their growth.

It is important to note that water is an essential commodity for any plant. So, you will be needed to water the bed enough. This is to ensure that the soil is ever moist since it should not dry out completely up to the time leaves sprout. As the time goes by, increase the amount of water to once or twice every week.

After that, you have to use some water-soluble fertilizer. This will be essential in facilitating the growth of the rhizomes. The application process will require one to follow the instructions indicated on the instruction sheet in the package. Apply the indicated amount in every stage to allow your crop to grow healthy.

Afterwards, you will need to cut the leaves after the crop has matured. The cutting need to be to a height of at least two inches. It will mean that they are ready for harvest. Drop the leaves on the ground since they will die and decompose. Uproot the rhizomes and cut them carefully. They will be ready for use as food after cooking.

Lastly, you can spread two to four inches of mulch and some manure over the bed after replanting. The mulching process helps in insulating the soil from direct contact with cold weather. The activity also helps to protect the rhizomes from the same and enabling you to acquire some root during the summer period.
