By Betty Miller

If you don't know what sort of cosmetic dentist you need, then anybody will do. Not necessarily a good idea for you. Instead, try using the following strategies to aid you find the right dentist.

If planning a surgery or procedure try to avoid the holiday time as dental offices and offices are often short-staffed during this time. Some of the most highly qualified dentists and dentists may be off on vacation during the holidays and their replacements may be not as experienced.

Understand that a cosmetic dentist's time is not unlimited. You deserve ample time for your office visit, but so do the rest of the dentist's patients. Be truthful. Don't schedule a routine physical exam and when the dentist enters, suddenly whip out a list of complaints from a yeast infection to heart palpitations.

While a dentist can charge for the service, they cannot flat out deny you access to your dental records. This is a law under the HIPAAn and they must comply.

By calling the dentist offices and clinics that you are considering during the searching process, you will be able to eliminate all of the disconnected numbers and closed clinics from your list. That will save time in the long run and allow you to find the one that you are looking for even quicker.

When you are telling your dentist about your ongoing problem, do his/her eyes glaze over, or are they as attentive as they were the first hundred times you brought it up? Do they offer anything new, or simply ignore the issue? If it is still of concern to you, your dentist should continue to offer treatment suggestions.

Ask the dentist if they would make the same life choices over again. They might be content with their current profession, but given the opportunity, they might choose a different path. This helps you to understand how they think and put things into perspective.

Find out if your cosmetic dentist is an active presence locally. If a dentist volunteers and takes part in his community, it can indicate that he/she is truly a compassionate person and the kind of dentist you would like for your own dental care.

Ask the dentist what their procedures are for sharps for example, used needles, and sterilization of the exam rooms and office equipment. What methods are they employing to ensure that germs are not spread from patient to patient when visiting the dentist? Most offices will have training certificates posted regarding first aid and blood-borne pathogen protocols.
