Central Facts Concerning Self Tanning

By Haywood Hunter

Self Tanning, also known as sunless tanning, utilizes special chemicals to produce the effect of a suntan without sun exposure. These sunless methods have become more popular within the last half a century, following health concerns. Health officials began linking sunbeds and sun exposure to the occurrence of skin cancer. Sunless products are a way to get the results of sun exposure without using products with high risks.

Products that include Carotenoid, in some form, are considered highly effective. They are present in many fruits and vegetables with strong pigmentation. Carotenoids contain beta-carotene, a natural and permanent ingredient.

Pills are just one of the ways to obtain a sunless tan. Many of these pills include beta-carotene or canthaxanthin. Beta-carotene is not known to cause any harmful side effects. Though in large doses, it can cause the skin to turn yellow or orange in color.

There are also pills that contain an ingredient called canthaxanthin. This is typically used in the production of color additives for specific foods. When this ingredient has been consumed, it deposits through the body, including the fat below the skin, turning it a orange or brown shade. However, these pills have been linked with several side effects such as damage to digestive system, canthaxanthin retinopathy and hepatitis.

There are other products that can offer a sunless tan. Bronzers are a common option for a temporary tan. These products may be in gels, sprays, powders, lotions, moisturizers, or mousses. Other active ingredients found in sunless products include Tyrosine, dihydroxyacetone, or Afamelanotide.

None of these sunless formulas include ingredients designed to protect against sun exposure. Therefore, individuals seeking sun protection should look into sunblock products. Keep in mind that self tanners may cause allergies and are capable of staining fabrics.

A popular alternative to outdoor tanning and sunbeds is called self tanning. This method can produce results that are similar to, if not the same or better than, results seen from using a sunbed or sunbathing. Plus, it does not include as harmful of effects. Most sunless techniques involve a topical formula or a special pill.
